Airport security...
« on: August 28, 2003, 06:47:52 AM »
Just saw this back on hometown news website.

http://www.koin.com/webnews/20033/20030827_tsa.shtml

They actually confiscated a Roto Grip Clear Grenade bowling ball.

Be careful when you're travelling and use purely ROto Grip equipment, because your spare ball might be confiscated.

also,

remember to keep your shoes and tape (but not the scissors and the nail clippers, bevel knives, etc) in your handcarry. things happen. you can always drill balls, but never break in new shoes!

The new measure being implemented are too much.  There have been
too many cases of rudeness to the point of abuse..  It is as if
the airport security people feel they have the right to do anything
because of 9/11.

I am a business man, and I've been to Asia, Europe, the states, and South America.  There has always been the threat of terrorist is some places, but the
US is over-reacting.

I'm planning to go to Brazil thru the States, but with the current situation, I am planning a different route.  And its not only me.  A lot of people are now starting to avoid going thru or to the states unless neccessary.

Good luck fortress America!!

I asked about that ball when I went through security a while ago. They said that they would confiscate it unless I had some sort of publication showing the ball, like an ad, or a magazine article. Then they'd let it go...

A guy from a comedy website I frequent(www.somethingawful.com) got stopped & harassed for the website's logo on his T-shirt. The logo just happens to be a grenade with an S & A on it.

They harassed him for 20 minutes & weren't going to let him go, finally he convinced them to bring him to one of their PC's in the office so he could show them the site.

How far is too far?

speaking of how far security has gone... in comparison to Korea and the Philippines, which I have recently visited about a year ago... is worse.

They were attempting to confiscate my Game Boy Advance because there were batteries in it. So i was stuck on a 12-hour flight to Los Angeles with no kind of entertainment.

I question the authority of these people. Cellular phones have batteries, yet that is no problem.

There are several inconsistencies out there. Orlando International threated me to confiscate a pin that Jason Couch had signed for me when I was at a Kegel Training Center Visit. I had to convince them that it was a damn souvenir.

There is no "standard" and nobody seems to know what they are doing except for taking your nail clippers and scissors. That's all they know how to do.

I have been lucy with my traveling.  Since March I have flown out of LAX to San Jose, Oakland, Reno, North Carolina, Indianapolis, and, this weekend, St. Louis with no problems.  Security and airport personell have been very helpful and friendly.  All of the above trips were with bowling equipment on either United or Southwest.  At check-in I tell them the bags contain bowling equipment in advance which generally brings about comments like are you a pro? I laugh and tell them not hardly, though they don't believe me even when I tell them I'm a 180 ave bowler.  It doesn't take much to impress the open bowler

Yes there are stronger security measures.  The most time I've spent from curb to gate is about 30 min and usually it is much less time.  Time well spent if it will help insure everyone's safety. Just my opinion.

I think you just hit the nail on the head.  Nobody really knows what they are doing, and are scared of being the one who let the terrorist thru.

Re the batteries, I think, am not sure, as I was sleeping in chem class.  There is a possibility of it exploding.  Of course in the right conditions.  About cellphone batt, I don't know.  Maybe they have never put 2 and 2 to get 5.
