Reading the lanes..whats your method?
« on: April 21, 2011, 02:42:04 AM »
So, for the first time in a long time, I was completely lost for 1 1/2 games before finding a shot that would carry.

I ended up using a shot that I don't remember using before (15 arrows, 5 break point) and felt totally uncomfortable using it.

I tried using all the "normal shot" that I know of, but none of them were working..

So, what works for you??

The first thing i'd say is NO ONE is capable of never getting "lost".

That being said.......

I think sometimes the key is a complete zone change but that requires versatility which not everyone has.  Hesitancy to move feet drastically and take that gamble of trusting yourself impedes this.  Chameleon is a good pattern that can demonstrate this.  My preference is to play 13-8 and find the right speed as I often do in league, but the LANE conditions often will not play that way.  Sometimes straight up 5 piping it is where it's at...... or outside that is the ONLY way to score, but sometimes its 15-20 out with a manipulated hand and being soft.  The ball is my read, and is the only thing that can tell me what to do.

From the description you have written 15-5 (and not knowing how you throw it, I am primarily a stroker bordering on tweener).  It seems the pair may have been shorter up front and / or a thinner volume.

This thread should also highlight the importance of a true benchmark ball for the individual bowlers style.  For me, the Anaconda will give me an idea of where i'm at as far as how the lanes are (should I ball up or down) and a direction "generally" on where to go as far, laterally.

But for me, I think the hesitancy of many bowlers to switch zones and make a huge moves (with feet and zone on the lane) leads often to a bowlers downfall....

If I'm looking for the shot the lane wants to give me in a house I'm unfamilar with, I use my benchmark ball throw it as if throwing at a 10 pin with my strike release, read the shot, then do the same thing with the 7 pin and then a couple of shots with my favorite strike line.  You should be able to see a good break point and read the lanes well enough to start league.

If I'm mid game and losing my shot after a game or two in a familar house, I have no problem making a big move and if I moved to far, then I know the shot is somewhere between where I was and where I moved to.  Not always easy, but it gives you a fighting chance.

I just look for the friction, simple.I carry to league a benchmark type ball, mid lane and smooth arc and a long n strong for playing the inside.ohh, and plastic.

I'm pretty confortable with trying various shots and line, but I'd never seen this type of shot layed out in the house (it's my home bowling center).

It was 42' of flat oil on a 1:1 ratio. All of my "normal" adjustments went ou the window

So basically a US Open shot but 2 feet longer?  YIKES!  MAJOR YIKES!  I think you have to be in the correct mindset walking thru the door when this type of battle is on...this is a whole different beast and mental prep is key, so if you walk into league and are in league mindset, this would be crazy..  Lane machine malfunction or mis-programmed?  Weird this was laid out in league...

If you're confronted with an oil pattern 42' long and the ratio is 1:1 then several things are obvious:

1) this is a shotmakers condition........you had better be sharp.

2) spare making will be of the utmost importance. Use a plastic ball for ALL spares except ones that involve double wood.

3) your best choice for equipment( at least early on ) will have a surface that is smoothsanded and NOT polished. Your equipment should be set up with a simple, stable drilling pattern.

4) no matter the angle of attack you choose you will need to play the lanes as straight as possible thru the front part of the lane.
