Going for 300... and the computers break down!
« on: November 27, 2005, 04:05:27 AM »

Yesterday was a bad technoplogy day. First, I flooded my rotary powered Mazda RX-8 and couldn't get it started. Next, putting up the Christmas tree, only 2 of 8 strings of lights worked (My wife breaks out 24 strings of outdoor lights the next day, and every one works).

And of course, bowling: I'm in a tournament, and I have the first 8. I'm getting ready to gop up in the 9th, and the computers on JUST OUR PAIR go dead. Yep, down they go. We wind up with a 20 minute break. I threw the 9th, but really had tightened up and kinda lost focus. I pulled the first shot in the 10th, finishing with 7/X for 277. Sucked! aargh!

Had the same issue several years ago in juniors. I go front 7 in the city tournament and then the computer on our pair resets some how. Front desk cant get the printout cause the printer was jammed and backed up from printing all the other scores. After a 15 minute delay and having several people back me up, officals decide we all have to re-bowl the game. I obviously extremely PO'd by this point had to bowl over, where my possible 300 turned into a 160 (thumb swelled up and couldnt get out of the ball clean). After the event was over I went directly to the tournament officals turned in my stuff, made sure everything was good, then proceded to tear up my YABA card in front of them, told them to F*** Off and told them to send any awards to other bowling alley where I bowled the night shift in an adult tournament.

That happened to me 2 summers ago.  First game I was on front 4.  The machines go down for 30 minutes and they are unable to retrieve scores so they make us start over with manual scoring.  I get the front 1, miss right on the last ball for 298.  I didn't know you could flush 15 strikes for 290 anything but it happened.  I still have the choke ring.

We had this happen in league several years ago. A guy had the front 8 or 9. When the computers went, they had to change pairs. He started on the new pair with the front 5 or 6.
The secretary, with the help of the local association, made the following ruling the next week:
If the computers go and you can reconstruct the score(s), you finish out the game. If anyone can't remember their score, THEY have to rebowl the entire game.

Don't know how it works out, but the guy got his 300 ring!

To answer mumzie's question.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Interrupted Game
Rule 106c. If equipment failure on a pair of lanes would delay the progress of a series, league officers can:
1. Authorize the game and series to be completed on another pair of certified lanes; or
2. Authorize the game and/or series to be bowled on one lane when another pair of certified lanes is not
available. However, when the original pair or another pair of certified lanes becomes available, the
team(s) may resume play on a pair of lanes. [CAQ #20]
An interrupted game and series shall be resumed from the point of interruption.
When authorized, the requirements of Rules 106a and 106b do not apply.
NOTE: Scores bowled while using one lane shall qualify for USBC award recognition.

True... but I would have liked to have had a shot without the 20 minute delay.

It was the Old Timers Tournament... 1st time I've done it, but it's the 75th annual event. Location was Thunderbowl. They had 2 squads of 90 lanes for this event.

this doesn't have to much to do with the topic but oh well.....awhile back in juniorsmy brother threw a ball that just dissappeared.  it got stuck in back .  we called for help when it was apparent that it wasn't coming back and they claim they had no idea where it went.  they ended up replacing his ball for him.  sure enough like 2 months later his ball just appeared on one of the house racks.....never did find out what happened.

if you ever want to get rid of the RX-8 let me know ill take it

It's a great car... looks great, handles superbly, and is a ton of fun to drive. However, its performance tires are just horrid in snow. Just a 1/2' of the white stuff makes the car undrivable. And after bowling on Wednesday nite the car slid when I entered the driveway and wound up stuck in the middle of the front lawn. I had it towed out the next day.

A little known fact about rotary engines with fuel injection is that they easily flood if run for a very short duration and don't get up to operating tempature. So, after being outside all night in the bitter cold, the 8 was pulled out with help of a service station and quickly put into the garage. And yep, the next time I tried to srart it was Saturday, and I flooded it good.

These engines are a PITA to unflood. You have to crank with the gas pedal floored for 8 seconds, then repeat with your foot off the gas. You keep doing this until it starts. It took me TWENTY MINUTES to unflood! Fortunately the battery held out just fine.

I have owned a number RX-7 rotaries prior to the RX-8, but this was my first flooding experience. I am sure it will be the last!  Below is a pic of my 1984 RX-7 with 24,000 miles. The 8 is in the garage behind it.
