Title: Another fun usbc rule to remember now (sarcasm)
Post by: suhoney24 on September 19, 2016, 10:31:58 AM
So I have been informed now that starting this year when I come back since I only throw with 2 fingers I can't put all 3 in the ball now for a spare (think along the lines of Osku) I mean how many little things are they going to keep adding to try to drive us away from this style of bowling?

What is the rule number for that?

Do you have a balance hole and a thumb hole in the spare ball?

Have him show you in the rule book. I can't find it.

I do not sir, all my stuff is 100% up to spec on that rule...the new rule is saying I can't throw with 2 fingers then 3 for a spare because it's altering my delivery

As far as I know, your league manager is full of crap. You can either passive aggressively ask the league manager to show you the rule in the rule book (he won't be able to find what doesn't exist), or you can simply email USBC yourself for a rule verification yourself, print it out, and provide it to your league manager straight from the horses mouth.

Either way, you're doing nothing wrong.

I've always thought that you should be allowed to throw the ball any way at any time provided you stay behind the foul line. If I'm RH, and I'm talented enough to throw LH to pick up the 10-pin, I think I should be able to do it. If I can master traditional form, two-handed, no-thumb, etc., that's a credit to my coordination and/or athleticism, no? Sadly, I think it all comes down to attempts to limit bagging. USBC feels that if they allowed people to throw any way they wanted, you'd have people establishing low averages with one delivery only to switch to another and blow the doors off of people using another.

I agree here also he's misunderstanding the rules involved. There is a rule that states you can't have more than one open hole in bowling ball basically. There is also a rule that you cant switch hands or if your bowling with a true two hand style think chest pass than you cant switch back. From what you've said none of this applies to you unless you stand at the line at shot put the ball with both hands for spares.

I've been called out on the same thing.

The rule book state you cannot alter your "normal" delivery... but it also says going from no-thumb to thumb is OK as long as you still use same dominant hand.

(Rulebook needs to be worded a little better you think?)

You should be fine as long as the ball itself weighs legal with regards to which delivery you use.  (Thumb in or out).

What a stupid rule.
I would protest it and spare with 3 fingers if I felt like it.
Though the 2 handers around here spare the same way, 2 fingers.

Thanks for the help and encouragement guys. The only shot I even do it with is the 10 and that's because it's cross lane and gets my form mixed up sometimes so it's just easier to go straight at it

The point here is that this "rule" isn't a rule at all. It doesn't exist. I've bowled in league with people who use two fingers, and then use 3 for the spare ball. There is nothing in the rules against that.

If I were the OP, I would also call out the league manager, and have him point out that explicit rule.

BL.

I have seen the alter your delivery rule used to protest other things.

I have seen a bowler leave a 7-10 split in the 10th frame and simply toss the ball from behind the approach.  The opposing team captain called that altering your approach.

Same with being upset and lofting the ball 30 feet down the lane in anger.

From the USBC site on the FAQ for this subject:

USBC modifies rule on bowling ball gripping holes
Lucas Wiseman
USBC Communications
Published: May 7, 2014 | Bowl.com

FAQ:

What about bowlers who sometimes use their thumb and sometimes do not use their thumb? For example, what if a bowler does not use their thumb for a strike ball but does use their thumb for a spare shot?

The bowler would need to make sure the ball is within specifications from both centers of grip (middle of the grip for thumb in, and center of the bridge for thumb out). If the bowler is going to switch back and forth between using their thumb and not using their thumb, they would need to use a ball without an additional balance hole.

They said the rule was just written into the book this year so not sure that one from 2014 is it

If Mr. Rulebook league official knows the rule is valid, he/she should be able to show you in the USBC rulebook. If he can't, tell him it ain't a rule until it can be proven. Or, make up your own rule like, a new rule that you automatically get a win when you bowl his team. Yep, says so right in the rule book.  ;D

This is from this year's rule book :

"18b/3 A bowler is using the two-handed approach. The bowler’s dominant hand is the right
hand. Can the bowler use the right hand for spares?
Yes, since both deliveries are with the same dominate hand, the bowler did not change
delivery and, therefore, is not in violation of any USBC rules"

As long as the ball is legal with both forms of delivery then it shouldn't be an issue.  This means that you would use two different ways of measuring the static weights. One with the center grip at the bridge and the 3rd hole as a weight hole. And the other with the center of grip between the fingers and thumb hole(3rd hole).   The 3rd hole would need to fall under all rules of a balance hole when bowling two fingers.

"2. One hole for balance purposes not to exceed 1¼ inches in diameter. This hole may not
exceed 1¼ inches at any point through the depth of the hole. (Slugs and tape will be
allowed, however interchangeable devices are not allowed)"

It is truly amazing how people can read the rules then twist the words around to fit it to what they "think it" should be.

Anyone that is telling you a rule, should have the rule book right there to back it up. I mean anyone can download it.

You can have up to 4 finger holes drilled into the ball and you do not techinally have to use any of them (just demostrate they can be used). Know the thumb hole and balance hole is different.  If you have a thumb hole and NO balance hole you do not have to use the thumb all the time (just demostrate it can be used). If you have a thumb hole & balance hole you have to use the thumb hole on every shot. We have several people here that have 3 to 4 finger holes and they do not use all of them on every shot and that is NOT against the rules. Someone is feeding you a bunch of crap.

As a two hander you can not have 4 holes in your unless you are a two hander that uses three fingers.

This information is only partially correct.  In any ball, with any delivery, you can have only 1 hole that is not used for gripping.  For example, if you have 3 finger holes, a thumb hole and a balance hole then you will need to always put your fingers (all 3) and the thumb in the holes.  Also, if you are a two handed bowler and do not have a balance hole but have two finger holes and a thumb hole drilled but do not use the thumb hole on every delivery or at all you are good.  You do not have to demonstrate that it is usable.  It is at this point a weight hole.

It was clarified to association last year.  The rule changed at the beginning of last season and the clarification came out toward the end of last season. It is not in the rule book but was sent out in a email blast from usbc to all local & state association. The rule change you are talking about it what some called a cyclob(spelling) drilling that is where people where putting the weight hole above the fingers. Buddy had  ball drilled like that and know it is illegal to use. Again you can have 4 finger holes in the ball and do not have to used all of them for each delivery. Thumb hole is a whole different situation. An honestly you can still have up to 11 holes in the ball (4 finger (each with a vent hole) and thumb (plus a vent hole) and a balance hole.
