Axis Migration After Release
« on: March 17, 2014, 07:54:19 PM »
A while back, I had measured my PAP to be 5 3/8" over and 3/8" up.  I had checked this using a plastic spare ball, and a few other lower flaring balls by tracing the oil ring with grease pencil, balancing on a spinner, and marking my axis.

Recently, I have been working on mechanics and release and wanted to "check" my PAP to see if it had changed and if so, by how far (just think... all new layouts!).  Unfortunately, all I had was my AMF Darkness (which has a very strong/high flare core) and some white thumb tape.  I played around for a few shots and found a spot that looked very good.  When I can home and checked, the tape was 3 7/8" over and 1/8" up.  Seems like a huge change in PAP...

My question is the following:  I know there is a fair amount of time (and length of lane) between my release of the ball and when I actually see the ball on the lane, given I generally target just past the arrows.  How much can/does one's true PAP migrate between release and when you can pick up a piece of while tape on the ball?  Presumably, this would be more with a stronger, higher flaring ball.  Would it be possible to migrate 1" or more or has my PAP actually began to change somewhat?

Thanks,

Scott

First of all, not sure why one checks their pap on a poly ball when they'll be using a reactive ball and their axis will be different...so on a poly ball your pap is 5 3/8" and on a reactive it's 4 1/2"...doesn't that effect the reaction by having an improper pin to pap thus creating the wrong amount of flare?
To properly find a pap it has to be as the ball touches the lane...it is too difficult to gauge otherwise...plain & simple

Seems reasonable to me...  sounds like I need to get the video camera out (or someone with a good eye)...

Have somebody stand to your left side (assuming you're right handed) and watch as you let it go
Get it stable at release

Rico, is there a Video on YT that you can recommend that shows the best way to check your PAP as your example above states?

There are several on youtube.  I typed "bowlers PAP" and hit search.  Some of them talk about more than just finding the PAP, too.  Good luck.
