I'm probably going to get myself into more trouble . . but I'll comment on this anyway. I guess the point I'm missing is that black people really care about race more than white people do, or maybe it's just most of the white AND black people I know that don't care. It just goes against everything I keep hearing. The black guys I work with are always saying they hate how big a deal the media keeps making about race, they always say it's just too much, and it makes them feel like we're patronizing them or treating them like little kids. My supervisor has a favorite quote: "I don't care who you are or what color you are, you give me the same respect you give everybody else. No more, no less, and we'll get along just fine." Another one I work with says it's just another form of racism, and it mainly has to deal with sports. "I really thought people were making progress, and now we're going out of our way to keep everything separate again. I know what they're trying to do, but they're just making it worse." So what am I missing? I just really don't get it. Basketball and football are the only two sports that are getting past it all. The sportscasters say a name, and unless you knew who that person was, you wouldn't know what race they were. Am I wrong to think it should be that way across the board? There just aren't any black pro bowlers for one reason or another, but the way they're making it sound, we're back in the 50's and 60's and segregation is happening all over again. There haven't been any rules amended recently to allow all races to compete or join, that was done years ago. Nobody of this generation would be racist if everybody would quit beating it into our heads. I look at everybody and see a person, but people keep ramming it down our throats that we're different and we have to treat everyone so delicately. There are a lot of differences between the races, but I can be just as different from my brother as I am from someone of another race. I'd take a bullet for a black friend just the same as I would for a white friend, and yet minorities still hate us. Any of you can say bowling and golf are too expensive for most black people to play and it's ok, but the second anything like that would come out of my mouth, I'd catch hell for it (not like I'd say something like that in the first place, cause I really don't think it's true), but we both could say that black people make better basketball and football players and I wouldn't think a thing about it. Is truth only truth when it's coming from the mouth of the party that's the focus of attention? There's respect, then there's being patronizing, and we crossed that line a long time ago. Am I right or do all minorities still want special treatment? I'd say the bridge between gender is a lot bigger than the bridge between race . .
