SirAshley actually is pretty close to being right. However, relaxing your grip and arm is only as good as the feel of your ball. The drilling you have on your ball should never be “good enoughâ€, it needs to be near perfect for you.
First thing to not squeezing the ball is if your ball has fingertip grips I would strongly advise on your next ball or plugging your current one and getting it “fingertip drilledâ€. Then make sure the pro shop driller only puts a small amount of bevel on the tips. If you do this, it will nearly force you not to squeeze.
Second thing is your thumbhole. If you are using an thumb insert, I would recommend going to a slug. This way you can modify the shape of your thumb. Try using a 0 pitch and if you still feel like your dropping the ball, try a forward pitch. I use 0 myself. Second, place at least 1 piece of tape in the thumbhole. I usually prefer at least one in the back of the thumb and in some balls one in the front. I wouldn’t add more then 4 pieces though.
Placing your hand in the ball: your fingertip drilled holes should be fairly tight, just when the first knuckle hits. Try just gently placing the fingers in the holes and lodge your thumb all the way in the ball as far as it can go without totally jamming it.
Now for the swing: Try using this grip and do not squeeze. You should be able to drop the ball and let it go behind you as if your 15 pound or whatever ball feels as heavy as a Soccer Ball. Pretend your arm and hand was just bashed with a sledgehammer and you can’t feel your hand or arm. This is a tip for the free armswing, not latterly. On the follow though, your hand should have little movement and attempt to lift with only one finger. I use the ring finger like a lot do, some like to use their middle finger. But you will notice a much different and cleaner roll lifting with the ring finger compared to with using both fingers and or lifting up with your hand/wrist.
Hope this helps.
