PBA experience practice...mystery condition
« on: September 05, 2007, 02:30:17 PM »
Hopefully if it's still around I would like to join this league but since I'm already committed to two other leagues, I don't know if I want to fork out more money per week for another league.

Anyways, I do enjoy the practice on Sunday mornings so far. My alley on certain lanes will lay out the PBA shot for the upcoming league. So far I've only got to play Shark twice and was a real eye opener what heavy and flat oil means. I had to play a inside tight line with areas on the lane the size of a penny. Eventully after shooting 150 and 170 games I figured it out and shot some decent low 200 games but nothing jaw dropping. I actully could get decent carry if I hit my mark decently and had some room if I pulled it a tad on the left but if I pulled in to the right it was gone. Getting a double on this condition is like a six pack in a league short crowned house shot.

This sunday I got there before they opened hoping they would lay out something different. I don't have the sheet but overheard the laneman it was the Cheetah. So right away I try to stand right as I do anyways and toss it outside. Nothing came back outside of 10 and there was no friction, no hook, no nothing outside of this no matter the release. So I thought there was no way this was the Cheetah and I played inside and unlike the Shark the ball was more difficult to rev up in the middle but would react on certain spots in the middle of the lane. One board right was the difference of hitting the 1-3 or the 6 pin. A couple boards left of this was brooklyn or a split. After moving all over the place in the middle I figured if I reved it hard but controllable I could get it to read on the heads and set it into the pocket. After 20 games on this the oil didn't break down much. Towards the last few games I went back to experimenting outside and stood on 10 and figured out if I got it out on the lane far enough without having to loft it in the air I could get the ball to react nice but I still have to hit 2nd arrow out to 13, a very, very direct line.

So seeing the Cheetah pattern as a spectator on the tour and seeing it in this league and bowling on it was apples and oranges. I'm guessing without proof it was not the Cheetah layed out but either the Scorpion or Viper. Definitly not the Shark again. Chameleon I know nothing about because i get a different story from each person I talk too. If this is the Cheetah, this was much harder then the Shark I bowled on. I know stripping and double stripping play a huge role and my house doesn't strip between every application so who knows what the laneman put out there. What you think? For those that bowl on this league are you sure they are putting the pattern out correctly and even putting out the pattern it is scheduled to be?

First of all, did they strip the lanes properly?  Hopefully you actually were on a legit shot.

Assuming it was the Cheetah, did you try rolling the ball STRAIGHT UP the 1-2-3 board area?  If you were trying to swing it out to that point, no wonder it wouldn't hook.

yes, a condition I encounter on leagues sometimes and feel it's my best chance to score. I've gotten pretty good at this type of shot so figured this is what I should be playing somewhat at least on this. Stood on 10 over 5-5 and did nothing and got even right of that and hit the six pin and a channel shot on the other. I even tried slowing it down and really got around the ball and again did nothing.
As for stripping, I doubt it but I can ask. This is on the part of the house that only has open play all night. So picture tons of hours all night with house balls and open play bowlers then in the morning don't strip and put a PBA condition on it. The other few bowlers that bowled on this was struggling as bad as I was.
However, it was a blast for 4 hours.

This is a situation I'm terribly worried about.  I'm joining a PBA Experience League that begins in a few weeks, but a practice session for the shot is this coming Monday night.  It's in a pretty old house with what appears to be a fairly old oil machine.  The mechanic and laneman is very knoweledgable, and does a good job, but I hope he is working that night, as he is about the only reliable one there, laneman wise, and is this machine capable of putting out the correct shot with the correct volume of oil.  Another question I have which I may want to put as another topic as I don't want to hijack Brian's original question is if the type of oil being used can make a great difference in how the shot plays as well.  All questions that will be answered in a few weeks for me.  Hopefully they get things worked out at your house, as a poorly laid down PBA shot can be very frustrating.

Also remember that the normal house track on the lanes can affect the play of the shot. In one house that I played on the Shark at, the area I had to miss right was 4 boards more then the other house. This was because the one house has a track area that is more around 8-12, and the other is a inside type house where the normal line is inside 12. The Cheetah at these two places was night and day. The house where I had more room with the shark, played perfectly with the cheetah, yet the other house didnt. This was because of the track area at each house. This is also why last year everyone seen Norm duke able to play where he did on the Shark at the one event.

Just thought I would mention that the PBA patterns are different depending on what lane machine is being used.  We had Shark on our house at the same time as an East Region tournament used Shark in another local house.  Shark was very difficult in our house but became a carry contest for the regional players.  Ryan Shafer lead qualifying with a 249+ average.  Some of our league players bowled in the regional and averaged 10-20 pins higher.  The only difference I could ascertain was that the regional house used Phoenix pad machine whereas our local house uses a Kegel Kostodian Brush machine.  I looked up the Shark pattern on the sport bowling site and noted that their was considerable difference between the one for the Phoenix as opposed to the one for the Kostodian.

P.S.  Both of the aforementioned houses are relatively new AMF HPL 9000 lanes.
Also, we use Prodigy oil and Defense cleaner.  Not sure what the regional used. The point is that there are many variables and anyone expecting these conditions to play the same from house to house is kidding themselves.
