Anyone....

That was interesting from the aspect that he basically said, when WRW had a similar experience with a fan and camera, that a PBA pro has to be prepared for anything and that was part of the game. Just goes to show you that when using the critic's eye on others it may come back and rear its ugly head on you.

I have both shows and let me tell you it is apples and oranges on what happened to Walter Ray Williams Jr and Randy Pederson.
Walter had a camera flashed in his face. He acted professional enough not to lose his cool too much. Kirk Von Krueger, the Director specifically told the audience no flash photography. Sounds like a simple rule to me. Apparently, the PBA didn't do any frisking after that incident and the same thing happend by a fan in the 2005 US Open to Patrick Allen. Again, he told the fan not to do that, did throw a 4 letter word muttered and that was that. Both resulted in open frames because of a split and a washout.
Randy Pederson was different. He disgraced himself on national tv. Apparently, and coincidently at the end of the game on a must strike ball a fan supposedly said or shouted something on the 2nd level of the auditorium. I couldn't hear it on tape, but Pederson made himself look foolish and unprofessional. The thing that ticks me most off about Randy Pederson is HE WAS LUCKY JUST TO BE ON TV much less the whole tournament. A few touraments before, Amleto Monacelli knocked him out of the Tournament of Champions. BUT...Pete Weber, who was in the TOC dropped out due to a shoulder injury. That then let Randy Pederson back in the tournament. Granted, he went through all the brackets to make it to tv, but still that was the biggest insult from a PBA player I've ever seen!
-
Randy sounds fine on the telecasts to me.

CRX,
yes you are correct on Kirk stating that about flashes but the person who did it was very developmentally handicapped. Walter was very pissed for a few minutes but later came back and apologized to the individual. They were quite traumatized when he yelled. By no means did they have any clue as to what they were doing. Randy showed his intelligence with his statements.
-
If you recall, Randy Pederson threw a pretty decent shot when he was so upset, he merely failed to carry a corner pin and lost to Norm Duke by a single pin.

Honestly, I can understand the outburst. When everything you've worked for comes down to one shot, and some d!ck yells out something to maliciously try to throw you off, well I can say I would have been worse... I woulda walked up and approached the guy and called him out. I would've been waiting in the parking lot with a tire iron. It would have been ON!!!... Not because it cost me the game, you can always win another day, but because of the principle. You want to attack me in a cowardly way, well, you should be ready to throw down. I'm not talking about a camera flash, that could be honest mistake, and yes, that is understandable. That is a fan trying to get a picture, not trying to purposely throw you off. So I say, Randy, you are a better man than I am, because that situation would have ended with someone being taken away in an ambulance if it were me...

SirAshley, I'm gonna have to side with CRX on this one. I watched the telecastlive and have seen it several times on tape. I've had the volume turned WAY up and have yet to hear anything that may have dramitically affected his effort. Like I said, he threw a good shot and failed to carry. From there on in, IMHO, he made a complete buffoon of himself.

I have seen it, he did look like an as$. I didn't hear anything either. He may very well have overreacted and that is possible. I was just trying to make the argument that if someone maliciously tried to ruin your chance at winning a tournament by trying to yell and distract you, you would react. I know I would. I realize that this is perhaps a character flaw but I feel if someone has a problem with me let's settle it like men, don't disrupt my chance at bringing home a paycheck to my wife. Although it is just a game, that is how they make a living and it should be respected... Again, he may have overreacted as I did not hear anything either, but I wasn't there so it's hard to judge...

He may have looked like an ass, but it cost him a title. We all know when the ball just doesn't come off our hand right we leave corner pins.. so I can see his point of being pissed.
I personally just think it was the wrong place.. he should of just flipped out in private.

Um, so, like, you've NEVER thrown a decent shot and left a corner pin? Come on. I'm not certain if you've seen the shot we're referring to. It was a pretty decent shot that simply failed to carry. Unless you're Robert Mushtare, it's been known to happen, from time to time.

I saw that show on Strike Pass, it was an embarrassment. A pro should be able to handle a minor distraction (I remember playing it back trying to listen for a sound, didnt hear anything). Sure it cost him the title, but damn, did you ever see Jordan screaming at fans after a missed buzzer shot?

That's right Ty, I forgot about that and the only reason that fan threw that beer at Artest was because he was a coward who never in a million years thought Artest would come after him... He was wrong... and Artest had every right to go up there and pop him one.

Lane 1 who,
Would you care to enlighten us? Like many others have said, the TV feed did not allow us to hear what was actually said or to see what may have been done by the fan in question. What did you see/hear? What did Randy do after the fact? I know that he was back up in the booth broadcasting the next match, so he couldn't have gotten too out of hand in the short time he had between losing the match and the beginning of the next one. Fill us all in on what we missed.
On a side note, I can certainly understand Randy's anger. I mean, that was his shot to keep his Tour career alive. If I felt that someone deliberately screwed with me while I was making the biggest shot of my life, I would be pretty ticked too. However, I do not condone what he did. He wound up looking very foolish. So, again, I understand why he did it, but that didn't make it right.

I simply cannot hear a thing that might have angered him as much as it did. Like lane1who has stated, there may have been something to really get him mad. I'd just like to know what it was. I thought there were a few people from the site that were there. However, I cannot remember what the distraction was.

Hrm...lets see.
I'm in the middle of a movie, and someone starts making noise...I'm going to say something.
I'm in the middle of throwing a winning shot, and someone starts making a noise...I'm going to say something just as well.
I haven't seen the video, but, I don't think there is anything wrong with a professional saying something. I have seen the same thing in pool and golf. Don't go to an event like this if you can't keep quite.
On edit, after watching the video..I would have done the same exact thing. Since the camera was not on the fans, we don't know exactly what happend, but what COULD have happend was that On the previous ball, randy just asked a guy to stay still, and he did so professionally. On the next shot, someone, just for spite, could have moved or made a noise. I don't think it would have changed the outcome of the shot, but I don't think anyone in Randy's shoes would have known that.

I remember the match very well there was no I repeat no yelling the only yelling came from Randy he said someone coughed and you can not hear it on tape I don't thinkl it happened if it did he's a pro if that bothered his shot that much he was in wrong profession and personally I like Randy I didn't appreciate the way he acted it is not professional what he did he looked like a spoiled kid

exactly. I don't see how anyone can defend him.
The Walter incident..when that happened it was pretty shocking to me.
-
Randy was on edge that day because of the opportunity to get his Tour Card back by winning the ToC. Brian Voss and Dave Ryan had mentioned during most of the match with Norm Duke how important this was to Randy and how emotional he was about the opportunity. He was on edge for the entire match and I was amazed he kept his composure as long as he did. I also think after that match was the time that Randy realized that his bowling career was probably over, not an easy thing to accept I would imagine. All the emotion boiled over and what we saw was the result. I understand where he was coming from (at least as well as a non pro bowler can) and I'm glad that it didn't escalate any further.

Benoit had a write up on this on Brunswickinsiders when it happened, he said someone yelled something in the stands, and the guy was later kicked out of the arena.
Randy could have handled himself a little better but his actions were understandable, that was his career on the line.
And for the people saying he's a jerk, do you know that personally or are you just talking out your a@s? Being from Florida also I know for a fact Randy is good guy.

Well.. I can say without a doubt, since I *have* met Randy that he is a complete and total arrogant, pompous jerk. Of course, this was many years ago when he still lived in CA, and wasn't married.. Maybe the married life has changed him some, but because of past events, he will always be a jerk in my book.

Not to get off topic, but I think Randy is a much better telecaster than Chris Barnes. I thought he was horrible for the womens tournament.

I watched the video and the announcers said that somebody moved. At the beginning of the video you can see Randy talking to somebody in a yellow shirt about standing still "like a statue."
There are 6 lanes, and they are bowling on the middle pair, so there is at least 2 lanes between Randy and the audience. Of course it is a stadium setting, so there are people sitting close to the pits. I've never bowled in that environment so I don't know how much movement would really bother me.
I personally don't see the big deal about noise bothering bowlers......for the entire qualifying they are bowling in a noisy environment, why the sudden need for absolute quiet during the TV show? I know the TV atmosphere is different with the lights, cameras, etc, but come on, they are professionals that spend the majority of their time bowling in loud, noisy centers.

And if it were a loud, noisy center with lots of movement and commotion it probably wouldn't have made a difference to him. But there's a world of difference between bowling in a place like that and somewhere that's quiet and still except for one guy.
Most people can go to sleep with, say, the TV or radio on. But make it silent save for one irregular beeping sound and see if you can still go to sleep.

While I don't disagree with your theory, I firmly believe that you have the ability to block out the distractions - if not then you need to work on the mental aspect of your game.
I have had plenty of times that I have allowed myself to get distracted by what somebody else is doing 3 or 4 lanes down, and I've had times where I didn't notice when somebody right next to me has dropped their ball during my approach. It's all about letting yourself get into a "zone."
Most people would assume that a professional would be able to tune those things out, and if not then they deserve to lose and need to work more on the mental game.

Well here is my take on it.
Bowlers can adapt to what they are used to. If you watch ESPN classic, I have seen old telecast pre 1995 where the fans were actually SCREAMING all the way through the approach to the release. It never really effected the bowler's why? Because it was constant. Its easier to block something out that is there (noise) than it is to block something that should not be there, in this case noise again. And is modern telecasts there is to be silence, therefore the bowler's focus is not on drowning anything out, so a sound can be shocking. Don't believe me? Go practice @ your local center with one of your buddies and have them call you on your cell right when you get to the line.
As far as how he acted, he did nothing wrong or distasteful. There were no expletives or even name calling, just enforcing the rules that were set in place.

I don't carry my cell while I'm bowling
I've had people fall onto the lanes, 1 lane away and haven't noticed. I also tend to practice during open play, next to kids who have no idea about lane courtesy.
When I can actually focus on bowling, I focus only on bowling. Likewise, when I can't focus, I start noticing what people are doing 7 or 8 lanes away......it's mental.

Upon reviewing the video, I do hear two banging noises, one before he begins his approach and the other during his downswing. It did not sound like a cough or anything. It almost sounded like someone kicking something or stomping.
Nevertheless, I stand by my original post. I can totally understand Randy's urge to lash out, considering the circumstances, but I still found it to be foolish. It would have made him look a whole lot better if he would just have taken care of the situation after the cameras were off, if he felt that the guy deliberately screwed with him and needed to be ejected. As it played out, nobody at home knew exactly what happened; all they knew was that Randy had something of a meltdown that made him look like an idiot.

I've been at Mohegan Sun a few times for the TOC and I can tell you from experience that any little noise is amplified in that stadium. During matchplay someone had accidently knocked over a small object next to me and it made a fairly soft bang against the seating area. I honestly didn't think much of it, but the pro's bowling at the time all turned around and I was almost up the top of the 1st tier of the seating area behind the lanes.

Anyone have a tape of Randy bowling when he used to use a wrist brace and was winning national titles?
I love his game.
And let's face it...Randy on TV was always good for the game.
A great bowler and star quality type of guy!
I've met Randy and though I can't say if he is a nice guy all the time or not(he was a lot of fun that day...very personable!). Let's put it this way...when Randy is at a bowling alley...he fills it up WITH RAndy!
I'd like to see him bowling again on TV! By the way...it was his career on the line.

Let me add that Randy did a bowling clinic recently in Las Vegas. It was very interesting, entertaining and he helped everyone there. Don't know what he would be like "off stage" but a hell of a nice guy in person.
The only "negative" is that he was preoccupied with making sure he got Wienerschnitzel for lunch
