Title: Anyone here throw 14# ers ?
Post by: _Stroker_Walter_ on March 05, 2008, 07:49:30 PM
I was just curious if anyone here throws 14# balls? I have been throwing both fifteen and sixteen pound balls for years. More than a year ago I purchased a Lane1 cobalt in 14# just for the hell of it. I find that I throw that ball better and it feels more natural. I also get noticeably more revs on that ball than I get with my heavier equipment.

Anyone here gone down in weight like I have with their equipment? Anyone throw lighter than 14#? Just curious.

I have a buddy that has gone from 16 down to 14 but now is back to 16 again.  My father in law we drill him 13lbs (yes 13lbs) he has a very short back swing and unfortunaley likes to control his arm swing.  If you like throwing 14lb I say go for it untill you find you sell loosing a free arm swing.

I've been throwing 14 lb for about 8 months. Dropped from 16 to 15 and then settled in on 14. I get nice revs without trying and I don't leave many 8 or 9 pins. All the balls I have, have the same hi-po cores as the heavier stuff. For me the carry seems to be a little better. 14 lbs definitely seems to be my comfort zone.

14 all the way.  My scores are higher than when I was a youngster although I averaged higher then.  I probably would be at 210 had I bowled in the summer and didn't start out clueless.

My spare ball is 14, but the rest are 15.

I'm rolling 14#.

If the 12-13# had the same core as 14-16#, I would be throwing lighter.

I find I carry just as well. Carry high hits better. Leave a five pin once in a while (easy spare?).

Less wear andtear on your bowling arm / hand joints.

I threw 14lbs for a bit when I was rehabilitating my wrist. Never lost any carry. Buddy of mine just bought most of my 14lb arsenal due to an shoulder problem and he scores well.

Talk to Charles. I know he throws 14lb exclusively and he averages 210+, so I don't think there really is much of a carry difference between 14-16lb. I think he had an injury which forced him to drop down, but he would be able to tell you all the pros/cons.

I dropped to 14# about 3 yrs ago because I reinjured my wrist. It took a little time to adjust to the lighter swing weight but after that it became natural.I shot just as many high games and series with the 14#ers.After my wrist got better I decided to go back and try my 15# stuff again--lasted about 2 wks-hurts my wrist and saw no increase in carry, have been with 14# ever since. Not going back now I have about 45 14# balls drilled it would be stupid to start over.

I just turned 71 and  dropped to 14# 2 years ago because of some health issues. Once over those health issues, I returned to 15# for a couple of months and then went back to 14# again because I seemed to get better carry and leave fewer 10 pins with 14# balls. With the strength of today's coverstocks and cores, 14's will carry just as well as 15's with the exception of Legend/Lanemaster balls. Unless you have some hand and revs of which I don't, those balls in 14# don't have the turn off the dry and pin carry that other companies balls do in 14# because of using lighter cores in their 14# balls.

I also use 14# equipment exclusively, but the youngins here have to know I'll be 63 later this month.  I started bowling at age 57 so trying to throw a 16 was out of the question, I did try it and couldn't comb my hair the next morning, LOL.  Anyway, I think the carry is great with all the new coverstocks and core designs out there and I've been able to average a little over 200 in this years leagues.  I do get a little sore after doing a 7-9 game block but that's to be expected at my age, nothing wrong with 14#, no matter the age, just my humble opinion.

I started using 14lbs over 5 yrs ago. I found the cores to be so strong I did not need to roll 15lbs no more. I also was having back issues and wanted to relieve some stress on my body.
The yr before I had to quit because I was having to have back surgey, I avg 219 with a very light 14lber, to be exact the ball was 13.12.
I took 2 yrs off to recover and I started back this yr and started league with a 11lb and after 10 weeks I had a 205 avg. But the center started soaking the track and that ball would travel too far down the lane. So, I decided to go back up to 14lbs and the 1st night I shot 662. Not too bad after a 2 yr layoff.
My highest set this yr is 748, which was shot just 3 weeks ago.
So in closing, a 14lb ball can pack a great punch and the carry is great too.

I used to throw 16. Then tendinitis set in, I injured my ring finger, and dropped to 15.
That was 11 years ago.
About 1 1/2 years ago, due to a shoulder injury, I dropped to 14. I wouldn't be bowling if I had to stick with 15. Although my average is down, it's up from where it was the last year with 15 pounds.
And I'm still bowling. I wish I could say it was pain free - but at least it's tolerable.

As far as hit and carry - I can actually get through the ball with 14. With 15, it was just a matter of dropping it.
I can leave corners with 15, 16, and 14. I don't know if there's much difference for me - but I do know I'm NOT leaving more of them with 14.

I just went down to 14lb two weeks ago and shot my first 700 series with my Rapid Fire. I think I get better reaction and carry with 14lb. I didn't leave one 10pin and shot a 716 series.
