Title: Anyone rolling urethane this summer?
Post by: r534me on May 30, 2011, 03:50:04 PM
I have a blue hammer drilled label and so far it's rolling nicely on the house shots.  I've used it at three different houses already and shooting for number four tomorrow.  Speed control and consistency (release, footwork, etc.) rewards the bowler with strikes most of the time.  So far, it's been a good training tool.

I have my Faball Blue Hammer, a Slate Blue Gargoyle and the black Pure Hamer (which is not a true urethane ball, but close) in store. The PH will be the standard ball in the bag for late games and lighter conditions, the SBG is great for truly short patterns with huge dry areas. The Blue Hammer is rather a training tool, even though it can be used on a wide range of conditions.

At least for practice, I carry the Blue Hammer and a Storm shift.  I do see oil in all of the houses because I used the left side.  For an old school ball it hits pretty hard.

The past 2 weeks on our league I have 690 and 711 with my Pearl Urethane Avalanche. This is a fresh house shot that rewards the "down and in" staighter angles and this ball is easy to control after the breakpoint, yet still gives me enough entry angle to carry pretty well. Right now it's beating up on a lot of high performance balls... I have found a winner in this one.

I've seen the AP and it hits hard.  I am surprised more people aren't trying urethane.  I tried to convince a friend to buy one .  He is always buying balls that go long..which makes no sense to me because i would rather have control on drier shots.  Anyway, he just refuses.

I haven't compared it to my natural, and I am pretty sure the core gives the natural an advantage.  However, I did leave a smash 8-10 today and I never did that with my natural.  I've left a couple with resin balls but never with urethane.  It could have been a bad rack or just some bad carry but I was not high flush.  I never saw the 6 go over the 10.

It's the best ten bucks I spent on a ball!

I never go anywhere without my original Blue Hammer.  I use it for spares and it's great when the lanes dry out or are being tricky.  Over/under is not a problem.  But on fresh oil I prefer a reactive ball as the Blue Hammer won't carry the corners.

Just recently picked up the Avalanche Urethane for the short Team USA patterns and am finding out that I may be able to use it on the fresh THS as long as speed control is there.  I took it down to 4000 to take the polish off it and may go a little more to help it pick up a little sooner.

Mine was only plugged once.  The guy I got it from used three fingers!  Oh wait, he plugged the thumb and moved it so one and half times!

Update.

Bowled league again last night (fresh condition) and the Urethane Avalanche continues to be MONEY with a 771. In 3 weeks of using this ball exclusively I am avaraging 241. Understand this: I am not this good!!! This ball allows me to go straight up 8 board and it carries everything! Not a single 10 pin left last night. This ball is amazing... Get one while you can...

Still carrying a Natural that I use primarily as a spare ball, but have used it with success on 2 or three occasions this year.  Best luck was winning a tuneup with it in the Senior Hight Roller.  It is very good for me on shorter, low volume patterns, or trashed house shots where I can sometimes play out.

Interesting thing was that I ran it through a revivor last month and took our more oil than came out of my resin balls.  I always thought that those old urethane balls soaked up a lot more oil than people thought, because simply resurfacing balls like the Blue Hammer only brought them back for 2 or 3 games until they lost the surface abrasiveness.

I used my hammer for over 30 games now and it hasn't lost it's effectiveness yet.  I am going to put it in my homemade revivor and see if any oil comes out of it.  I read that it's not very pourous and it shouldn't soak up oil but I'll report back.  I got the ball pretty beat up and it's likely never seen any type of baking since it was made in 1994.

As far as the natural I read in the past that the liquid coming out of the ball were the chemicals of the ball and not oil.  Someone who knows more please chime in.

edit:  I heated up the blue hammer for about 20 minutes and there were no traces of oil on the ball.

Been using my Pearl Urethane Avalanche sanded down to 500 and it has seen more games than anything else in my bag!  We have jackpots on sport and I opened with 230 240 one week and 240 250 the next.

Dull urethane allows me to control the pocket more and use hand/speed changes to adjust how the ball goes through the pins.

I have a video capture of the blue hammers hit from the bowl's camera.

Urethane works quite well up the outside on house shots.

BTW, where do you bowl in BC?  I usually go to town and country when I am there.  I have been to Revs too.
