Title: Anyone using smooth black thumbhole tape?
Post by: Geigs on November 25, 2018, 08:47:13 PM
Just started using master 1 inch black smooth thumbhole tape in back of thumb, knuckle side. Trying to get a quicker release. Always used the white textured, and found it to gum up, making me hang up, especially in warm humid weather. Well I really love the feel, and release I get with the black. Problem! Tape doesn’t want to stick to my knife putting it in, or even in the thumbhole that well. Bitch to remove as well, peels , breaks apart in pieces. Tape is super thin. I’m thinking it’s just cheap brand tape, though I think storm owns master. Anyone using black tape? What brand?

I do, I can't use white against my skin as my hands are too dry.

I've been using the Monster Tape from bowling ball .com

+1 on black tape from Monster.  Also just got some Ebonite Ultra-Grip and so far so good.  I mostly use it to cover up drilling screw ups (down hole edges from drilling into plugs, etc) since I don't usually use inserts.

Provided that nothing has changed in ther manufacturing over the last few years, I strongly recommend the Ebonite black tape. It's a thicker black tape and doesn't gum up easily. I've never had issues with tape residue and it's FAR easier to remove than Master black tape.

I second or third Ebonite Ultra Grip black tape. It stays in place very well, yet the tape is pretty easy to remove. The tape also has a smooth natural feel. I also like Ultra Grip because, as Walking E notes, the tape is thicker than most brands.

Actually just discovered the Ebonite black tape and I love it! Super smooth so I can get the thumb as snug as possible and still have it come off no problem.

I have used electrical tape for the back of the thumb hole.  You can get this tape at any of the big box stores like home depot, lowes, or any place they sell.  They come in different colors and are easy to install and remove and they are quite reasonable in price.

Thanks guys. Just ordered a 100 piece roll of the ebonite ultra grip black tape. After years of struggling with feel, using textured tape in back, and front of thumbhole,  tried them all, vise, storm, ebonite, amf, rbt. Realized the textured tape in back was delaying my release, causing me to hang, hit up on the ball, also causing me thumb pain. Black burn mark on tip of thumbnail, callus on knuckle from the rough texture. This is my new setup that’s transformed my game, feel. Use one piece of vise textured purple, or orange in front of thumb so I can hang on without squeezing. Use 5,6 pieces of the master black in back of thumbhole for a quick, smooth release, and a piece of storm thunder protective tape on back of thumb, knuckle side. Thumb pain has decreased in only 1 week of this new setup. Shot 300 in league last night. Consistency, and feel of my release has improved. Like I said in my original post, only issue with the master smooth black tape is it doesn’t stick very well, and is a bitch to remove. Looking forward to trying the ebonite smooth black.

I use black tape for inside my ball, and then I also get the bowlers tape for my thumb as well. I never have to work about sticking because of the texture, its just making sure I have the right amount of tape.

Unfortunately the Ebonite, though it sticks really well, is really tough to remove too.
And I actually bowled like crap last night  So, I have to modify my formerly glowing praise  :P

I believe the Powerhouse brand Black Tape is thicker than the Ebonite tape and easier to remove.

You might try the blue or silver real bowlers tape. They  have a feel quite unlike all the other's.

Tried rbt silver, it’s the worst of them all. Textured, and tacky as hell. I mean this stuff is like glue. Especially in hot, humid bowling alleys. Makes me hang up.

if you are looking for a quicker release get some of turbo black thumb tape that goes on your thumb. It will get you out of the ball super fast, comes in a wide roll just cut it to whatever works for you.

Why bring the race of the tape into this?  Can't it just be tape?

Never even knew rbt came in a smooth blue. Only tried silver textured, which I hate. Thanks guys. Just ordered a roll of 100 for 15 bucks. Can’t go wrong for that price. Going to give it a try. Ebonite black is ok, better than master. But always looking for better products. Really like the smooth feel for the back, knuckle side of thumb compared to textured.

Thanks dcb for the suggestion on the rbt smooth blue. Stuff is great. Used it today for first time. It’s a little thinner than the ebonite black,  but I don’t mind that. Less likely to get between pieces of tape. Liked the way ebonite feels, but had problems with it sticking in thumbhole and taking pieces out. Often the 4, or 5 pieces would all come out in one piece when trying to remove. A+ on the rbt smooth blue so far. Thanks guys.

I'm giving up on the smooth tape, at least for the front side. Scores plummeted and that's the major change I made, and I don't think a different brand would help that. Maybe a piece in back before my thumb fully swells up.

I use Valentino Franken tape on the front side and it give a smooth, consistent release every time.
