When you hear someone say "rotation" in regards to bowling
« on: September 08, 2014, 04:38:58 PM »
When you hear someone say "rotation" (or read it somewhere) and it is in regards to bowling, what comes to mind. What do you think rotation means?

I am not trying to trick anyone. I am looking for honest answers. I think this is one word that gets new bowlers confused.

There is axis rotation, rotational integrity, rotation as in applied force

I think of axis rotation.

Unless they are referring to player rotation in the line up.

Some people will mistakenly say rotation when talking about the spin on the ball, when they actually mean revolution or rev.

Revolution vs. rotation.

Rotation is often misused, or misunderstood.  The term is correctly used as a degree measurement of the amount the axis is rotated from 0 degrees ( pure end over end ) to 90 degrees ( maximum side roll ).  People sometimes confuse the term with rev rate, which is independent from axis rotation.  You can have a high rev rate with low axis rotation, or a low rev rate with high axis rotation.

The current trend among the best bowlers who see lots of flatter conditions is to maximize their rev rate while reducing their axis rotation.
