Are you PBA good?
« on: March 28, 2007, 12:51:38 AM »
There are a lot of people that have high expectations for themselves on this board, are yours this high?  Every week there are armchair bowlers stating what they would have done that the pro on tv didn’t and they would have won the title.  Do you actually believe that you are this good, that you could compete at this level?

Aside from people currently bowling on the regional tour, who here actually thinks that they are PBA level and could either be on the tour, or are able to beat the current top 24 in points on the PBA tour?

I am not attacking anyone, just curious to see the expectations that others have of themselves.

Personally I have bowled against guys that have been on the tour, been on TV on Sunday, I can beat them one maybe two games, but they will win 7-8 games out of 10 against me every time.   These are the guys that are not out there anymore, they were not good enough to make it on the new PBA with the exemptions, they don’t make it through the qualifiers, but they still are competitive on the regional tour, capable of top 10 finishes.   I am good on a house hack level, but I am not PBA material, I would not utterly embarrass myself in regional play, but I would be an also ran.

Oh wait. The topic was are you PBA good.  Sorry, I guess that would open it up to anyone with a 190 average.  Anyone can get a card and become a PBA member.

When I think of PBA good, I'm thinking of the exempt field, which is the top 40 or so bowlers in the US and a few overseas players that wish to come here and compete and doing it over a number of years.

How come we don't see all of the no namers you talk about that are good enough winning the Masters, High Roller, USBC, and other big name tournaments?

Funny how I see the same name bowlers winning 99% of those tournaments instead of the local stud that everyone thinks has what it takes.

People with full time jobs can't bowl all of those either.  It takes time off work and expenses to bowl those too in can you didn't realize that.

Randy Petersen retired.  Tim Criss retired.  Brian Voss maybe backing off.  Mike DeVaney said he was thinking about not touring next year.  It is a job to some guys, a passion to others, and right now it isn't paying.

A week off might cost you a couple of hundred bucks.  With your skills, you should walk away with thousands and thousands at the high roller. Seems like an easy choice to me.

If I was as good as you, I'd for sure give up a weekend at a chance of 3,000 at a regional.

The bottom line, you are only TALK, with NOTHING to back it up.

I did take this weekend off and cleaned up at the Indiana State tournament were I shot 751 for singles, swept the brackets, and will place is the scratch division.  If I was financially set I would be bowling regionals and making my way into the exempy field.  I DID bowl the PTQ when they were in Hammond.  I HAVE cashed in PTQs.  I have beaten an exempt pros head to head on a sport pattern.  Why aren't you on tour?

I have been amazed watching the shows lately ...especially this Weeks Denny's World Championships.

Every bowler was playing two lines.  Quick adaptations were made by every bowler.  The scores and vesatility were simple outstanding by every bowler!

These guys....are TRULY....great!

PS...and oh yeah...the week before...the Norm and Ryan show(brilliant also) and oh yeah...the week before....and oh yeah....well what a brilliant year!

LL, you are exactly right, we are seeing why they are pros, why they are the best in the world.  They know there game so well, and have such indepth knowledge of the game they can make huge adjustments and still bowl the scores they do.  Amazing  !!

my main reason to start bowling pba regionals last year was to challenge myself. i told myself if you apply yourself and try to learn from the experience you'll be better off. it was hard----as it should be. i had to make good shots all the time. i couldn't afford to miss spares. open frames had to be forgotten. the mental side is very draining for those 8 games of qualifying. my wife knows how much work i put into getting ready for a regional tournament. i bowled 3 tournaments last year with a 202 average for 24 games. this compares to my 225 league average. i'm bowling 5 tournaments this year. i've worked even harder to prepare myself. i can't wait to test myself again.

average 200 on THS or 190 on sport for 2 seasons and you are eligible to apply for a PBA card

I would take on any exempt player head-to-head, toe-to-toe, any day of the week!

THAT is hilarious.  But seriously, i can compete with the regional guys now, but not the exempt players.  I haven't won a regional, but i've cashed in all 3 that I've bowled.  I'm not allowed to bowl anymore until I get my card, which I will in April or so. It's tough, but in the long run, I got as good a shot as anyone.  People come up to me and say, "Why aren't you on tour, why aren't you on tour."  Because it's to  f'ing hard to compete with them right now!

Right now I am not PBA good but it will not stop me from attempting to be that good. I have gotten better in some way evary year I have bowled and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon. Not saying I will be the next Sean Rash I am saying that I will not be satisfied with anything but my best effort and I will nevr stop working at getting better.

Does it count when a couple house bowlers on the lane next to you who see you start off with a 170 and 180 game ask if I'm a professional count as being ready for the tour?

I did do a little bit better and finished off with a couple 220's on a burnt up house shot before I got tired of dealing with the kids messing with my equipment and packed up.

to the elitist:
you are telling everyone to post their name, how come you haven't posted yours.  and if your profile is accurate averaging 249 in league, how come your not on tour?  who really cares if everyone thinks their pba good or not?  when it all boils down some people just dont want to put in the commitment it takes to be out there full time, dont have the finances to be out there, and maybe even would rather just bowl one night a week and average 220+ and go home feeling good.  who cares really to each their own.  just my 2 cents....

I think if I were to bowl PTQs for a season, I could break through and have moderate success. I've had moderate success at the Regional level, consistent cashing, making finals and winning matches. I have yet to break through and win mainly because of being slow when it comes to making adjustments in match play.

Physically, I believe have the talent to compete, the difference comes with the mental game, game preparation, and making game-time decisions quicker than the next guy.

The right mix of talent and mental toughness is what it takes to be successful on Tour in my opinion. Of course there are guys and girls who are lacking in one area but excel at another and make it work for them.
