Arsenal experts please help : )
« on: September 01, 2003, 08:59:30 PM »
Hey everyone, once again I have what I think is a fairly diverse arsenal. However, as I've seen in the past, sometimes I don't know what the hell I'm doing. So, those of you who pride yourselves on the ability to set up a very strong arsenal, please take a look at this and see what you think.

Sport/Control:                              Purple Ex.-box-pin under ring, cg in line
  Heavy Oil or Med w/carrydown: Granite Gargoyle--box--3-3/8" X 3-3/8"
Med-Clean backends:                Cherry Bomb-box, label shift
  Light-Med w/clean backends:   Blade Pearl-box--pin @ 1 cg in grip center
  Light Oil:                                        Tomahawk LT--box-3-3/8" X 3-3/8"
  Burnt/spares:                               Blue Pearl Hammer-box-label
??????????:                               El Nino Wrath-polished, pin below and
between fingers, cg kicked 1" left, mb left
of thumb, weight hole about 6" left of cg

I also have a NIB Monster Smash/R on the way, which I think can work for lighter mediums w/carrydown if I polish it up a lot. Anyhow, does anyone see a hole in there anywhere? Just wondering what some of the experts think. Thanks in advance for looking and for any suggestions you may have.

you have 4 balls for medium-light to medium (with clean backends); but you have a hole you could drive a truck through between the Cherry Bomb for medium with clean b-ends and the Granite Gargoyle in box condition (320 grit!!!).

Do you never face:
- medium with carrydown,  (Cherry Bomb will not handle that)
- medium with heavy carrydown,
- medium-heavy with clean backend,
- medium-heavy with carrydown,
- medium-heavy with lots of carrydown, and
- heavy oil with clean backends? (Granite Gargoyle *may* be too much for this).

If so, then you are set. If not, then you may need some solid resins, maybe a mild solid particle and one or two of the above with both mild and strong drillngs. If you think you may need a ball stronger than the Cherry Bomb, keep the SmashR in box condition.

Jeffrevs,

  Thanks for the input.

Charlest,

Thank you as well. As far as your overview, here is what I think. You may be right about the medium conditions with carrydown, as the CB has struggled on that condition. For that reason, I have considered keeping the Smash/R dull, as you suggested, or selling it to put towards a Black Cherry Bomb or Vicious Attack. As for the other conditions you listed, (medium with heavy carrydown, medium-heavy with clean backend, medium-heavy with carrydown, medium-heavy with lots of carrydown), I think that the dull Granite or Smash/R will be able to handle just about any amount or carrydown, especially with changes in hand positions and lines. As for medium heavy or heavy w/clean backends, I've found that the CB can recover from anywhere on the lane if there is a touch of try to work with, so as long as the backends are clean, and the oil isn't too long, the CB can take care of it. Thanks for the suggestions. I should've provided more info from the start, then maybe my solutions for the conditions you've listed would have been clean.

Anyone else??

Don't really know how you throw the ball, but my guess is somewhere between stroker/tweener.
Don't underestimate the Smash/R. All it needs is a couple of dry boards, and it'll go through almost anything. However - if you see it start to slide, put it away - it'll get through some carrydown, but not a lot. I usually pull out a particle drilled similarly at that point.

Gene,

I would sell it and go with the Black Cherry Bomb.  Charlest made some good observations, especially the one of med w/carry regarding the Cherry Bomb.  The Black Cherry should be able to handle the cary down and med or even heaver conditions.  The only thing I would like to add to the line is the XXXL; because of its weight block, it hits harder, yet skids when needed.  I have been very happy to have had this ball when things were too dryyy to use ANYTHING else, and people did not believ that I was throwing a plastic ball.

Gene,

Balls or releases can be a solution; all I pointed out what what I saw. There are or can be some holes; how you fill them or even if you need to fill them is your decision.

Like you, I also face many more variations of medium-light, some with carrydown, than I do with medium-heavy. So, I also have more available solutions for those problem areas.

Might I add, that a big hooking ball, like the Cherry Bomb, can be problematical on many medium to medium-heavy conditions.

Good Luck.

Hey everyone, thanks for all of the replies, they are all very helpful. Charlest, I hope you don't think that I was discounting what you said in your original post when I posted my reply. The only reason why I did that was so that others who might have made the same observations as you would know how I had planned to combat the potential holes that you had listed. I appreciate all of the input that everyone has given, and I thank you all for taking the time and effort to offer your suggestions.

Gene,

You are one of the most polite of people who post here. No, I think you really do take everything everyone says into consideration. My ego, of course, like what I say to be considered, but I offer all opinions for whatever use the reader/requestor may choose. I only hope I help a few. If they say so, my ego is placated. If not, I better assuage it with some good bowling ....

I don't think the SmashR will solve your problem for reasons Mumzie suggested.  The Black Cherry might work, but let me suggest also a Blade Particle.  I think you will find for the bucks, it is very good and given the rest of the balls you have listed, would probably provide you the reaction you are looking for.  And no, its not my choice, but given what you have listed and your apparent preferences, it probably is the best for the buck.
