Some Bowling Styles Benefit from fried heads.
« on: December 05, 2016, 09:16:47 AM »
I have seen some styles that benefit from a dry spot in the heads. It's like their ball rev's up a little, then gets back into the oil and slides, then has a decent hook and roll at the end.

They just don't get the same reaction at the end when the heads have oil.

Doesn't matter what is out there, somebody will hit it.  Some like it slick, some like it dry, and some like it somewhere between the two.

I hate dry heads. I used to know a guy that would eat you alive if you gave him dry heads because he could get his ball through them when I could not. My shots burned up early, and his just seemed to float through.

Something that affects this for most bowlers is the natural reaction to start trying to grab at the ball and throw it harder. This adds to the problem of the ball reading early and losing reaction down lane.

Bowlers who maintain their natural release and don't try doing more to the ball can make the lanes look very easy.

It's not easy mentally, but if you do it you will see a much more favorable reaction.

Back when I bowled on old wood lanes, I developed a bit of a spinner release (really just a lower track) because of the heads burning up.  I didn't do it on purpose, just evolved into that type of release to combat the early burn.

There are some natural releases that perform well on burned heads just like there are natural releases that perform well on flooded heads.  What is important is developing your personal style to match what is required to score the best.  Or at least realize what the issues are and how to adjust accordingly, physical or equipment.

It is so weird bowling against this type of bowler. We are wanting opposite conditions.

Dry heads killed me for a long time till I bowled in a fun travel league and watched the seniors bowl. I basically watched how they knuckled the ball down lane - the ball picked up at mids, hooked, and rolled to the pocket.

Then I realized that's how I rolled my spare ball. I killed my shot with my spare ball and tried this with my strike ball. It took time to get used to, but with some practice, this really worked well for me. Visually it was hard to get used to, and my pride had to be put in the box and my man card hang on my chest. I had to fight the urge to throw my normal release or rev it up. When I reached my limits playing inside, this technique helped me stay close - but deflection/corner pins can be plenty.
