Title: Average recovery time after tearing Rotator Cuff
Post by: briandking1906 on February 25, 2016, 09:21:45 AM
Was warming up for league last night, and felt something pop in my shoulder while throwing at a spare.  Tried to throw the ball a couple of times after that, and had this painful tear like feeling in my should when releasing the ball.  One of my teammates suggested that I may have torn my rotator cuff because he experienced something similar a couple years ago.

I'm scheduled to see the doctor on Monday, but just wanted some feedback from others who may have already experienced something similar.  And if it did end up being a rotator cuff tear/injury, how long did it take for you to heal up and get back to bowling?

It stinks because I have a new Seismic Tracer being delivered today, and a Pyramid Pathogen coming in April.  Also had state tournament next week and it looks like I'm done for that as well.

Thanks

6-12 months after surgery

I had a torn labrum and partial tear in my rotator cuff repaired in August that was from playing baseball all of my life. My situation was a little different than most people experience because of the strength I had built in my shoulder around the tears.

I was back throwing a 13lb ball in 6 weeks, back to a 15lb ball in 9 weeks, almost normal in 4 months, to now completely normal 6 months removed from surgery

If I remember correctly, there are multiple degrees of injury to a rotator cuff (sort of like the degrees of an ankle sprain)...in a lot of cases, one didn't just go from healthy to torn.  I never had surgery on mine though...but I know there is some fraying that has occurred (problematic if I play softball and am throwing a lot, which is one reason I stay at 1B).

As with any other injury though, do not rush the rehab...little good ever comes from doing so.

Each shoulder injury can be different person to person depending on what's affected and the recovery time. What's important is having a good doctor that understands your lifestyle and recommends recovery tactics that help you return to your regular lifestyle prior to injury

I was bowling carefully after 4 months,  but my bicep was also torn.  For full recovery it was 6-9 months.  Good luck.

I had mine done years ago and doctor said I would be bowling in 3 months as long as you do your therapy and he was correct.

Corey867 is probably the closest. Like some of the others replied depends on the severity of the tear and if there are any complications. I've had both of mine done with in the last 2 1/2 years. Left shoulder froze up after surgery which made recovery longer. Right shoulder ( I am right handed ) had to put cables in shoulder to pull cuff back in place it was almost detached. Took me about 9 months each time before I could start throwing the ball again.

Good Luck

Sorry to hear that, retear of the rotator cuff is pretty high if the original tear is larger. I know quite a few people who have had multiple surgeries on their shoulder as the first doctor they went to didn't do a high quality repair or missed something like bone spurs.

My recommendation for people is to not only find an orthopedic surgeon, but one that specializes more in the injury they have.

Had the x-ray and MRI completed, and it turns out it is not my rotator cuff as I may have originally thought.  Turned out to be a torn bicep muscle.  Looks like surgery will be required to get it repaired, but hopefully I can be nice and recovered by sometime next fall league season.  Get to speak with my doctor this Wednesday to get all the nitty gritty detail.

Thanks to all for your feedback and experience regarding these types of injuries.

briandking1906,

My bicep was the easy part.  It was torn up wear it inserts into the shoulder joint, so the repair was to drill a hole into the upper arm and re-attach it there (basically thread it through and tie a knot).  The rehab was way easier than for the rotator cuff.  End result is my right bicep dropped slightly lower, but strength-wise it's been good...  Hope yours goes as smoothly as mine.
