Average turned into USBC
« on: May 02, 2013, 11:37:03 PM »
Just out of curiosity, when do secretaries have to turn in league averages from the current season. I thought it was May but Im not sure. And if our league ain't done, and you finish higher or lower, can you use your final league average instead of book avg.

Sandbaggers making up pins in the last four weeks of a league?  Pretty damn hard thing to do considering amount of pins already knocked down and amount of games already bowled.  Let's say a guy has a 186 average after 81 games with 15098 pins knocked down with four weeks to go (takes you from 4/1 to 5/1). He shoots an even 700 on each of the last four weeks, he brings average up to 192.  I'm sorry, I just don't see the big advantage that he has gained in future tourneys or even next year in league by having a four week gap from time averages are submitted and end of league.

In terms of a person like that bowling handicap tournaments, the advantage gained is mathematically small, but becomes large if they win a tournament by, say, 8 pins.

The bigger advantage comes if the team is contending to win the league, with this bowler now shooting 100+ pins over average every week. That could make a big difference, especially in a roll-off.

I am our Association's manager and I turn mine in when I am ready and all the leagues are finished. The USBC has never said when they are due or ever ask for them.

Has nothing to do with averages being turned in.  Now you're talking about sandbagging.  Two entirely different things.  Prove the guy didn't get a cortisone shot in a balking shoulder or elbow.  Prove he didn't try a new drilling on a new ball, etc, etc, etc.

To luv2bowl, yes, it is independently decided by each local association.

As I see it, the big advantage isn't in future tournaments, it's in the points won while shooting 700+ with handicap based on a 186 average.  --  JohnP

Thanks, newbie. We've always used average as of 04/15, and the USBC letter you linked verifies that.

Based on the other responses here, I thought might just be a California thing. Guess not.  :o

I'm sorry but there is no ABC rule that says on what date averages must be submitted.  It is solely up to the local asscociation.  The letter that is shown says there is an USBC rule but doesn't list the rule number.  With good reason, it doesn't exist. http://www.mdusbc.com/Main%20Pages/calendar.htm

Please scroll down to April and note how the word "designated" is used for the date they want it turned in.

We just bowled the California USBC open. They base averages on the April 15th book.
