Title: Back to basics: Hitting my mark
Post by: v02maxlefty on October 27, 2004, 02:33:57 AM
I've been having problems discerning which mark is best to focus on with each shot.  I've tried dot, arrows, and break point.  I'm back to arrows for now, but open suggestions.

In general, I think the arrows are a good target.  If you want to play a line to your breakpoint, then you should read this:

Hope that helps...

I use all 3 but only one at a time!

But I have trouble switching; the pros don't.

When really oily I use dots - always give me an earlier flight and roll.

When normal the arrows.

When dryer the breakpoint or 1/2 way mark.  Had a lot of luck with the 30 foot mark when carrydown!  Often I stay same place with feet and move my tragectory spot at the 30 foot mark in 1 board.

PS quick story on heavy oil which I've become fairly good on.  A few years ago my pro came out and I said it's too wet, I can't make this ball work.
An old Amforce 4 pearl!  I need my heavy oil ball which is at home.  I had not thrown a strike till that time.  Maybe 20 balls!  He said move your eyes to the dots.  Had me also move a couple of boards left(lefty).  18 strikes in a row later the string stopped!  We both laughed!  Not much trouble with heavy oil since then! (oh he said go half way to dots when really really soupy!  Almost never have to!)

I use boards (not that I always hit 'em you understand).  There are some synthetics that are very difficult since they are uniform in color, but on wood or most synthetics there is variation so you can pick out a discoloration to aim at.  I vary the depth of my aiming point depending on how dry the lanes are; closer = wetter.

Like Rags I like to use boards. I use to pick boards out at the splices but since they have changed to synthetics I use boards at the arrows.

The arrows seem to be a happy medium. They are far enough down the lane to help you project the ball but close enough that you still roll the ball.

Also the arrows are about ¼ the way down the lane so 1 board is 4 inches, 3 boards = 1 pin left or right.
