Back Up Balls

I recently bowled in a lefty/righty tournament where they allowed a right hander who threw a back up ball( he threw a normal hook to make 7 pin spares) to be classified as a lefty. Is this allowed?

Whether or not they threw a backup ball is irrelevant.  It has to do with what hand they throw the ball with.  If they throw it with their right hand, they are classified as a right hander regardless of whether they throw a backup ball or a traditional ball.  They could also throw the ball two handed and as long as their dominant hand on the release is their right, they would still be considered a right handed bowler.

What zonepro said.

There have even been natural left handed people who bowl with their right hand that are classified as right handed bowlers. Hell, I even had a guy in college with me who was a natural left hander, bowled with his right hand, and threw a backup ball. Still, he was classified as a right hander.

If the tournament was a sanctioned tournament, next time they have it and he's there, call out the organizer of the tournament and let them know that he's misclassified that bowler and would be against the rules.

Depends on the tournament. If it's not USBC sanctioned, then it's up to the tournament chairperson and or committee. Even if they don't have a specific rule that covers it, the folks running the tournament can make any decision they see fit.
