Back up bowler - female
« on: March 25, 2021, 12:57:51 PM »
A teammate,  female backup bowler wants to learn to hook the ball/increase turn/tilt.  She currently comes up the back of the ball with a little turn, using a RG Idol Pearl and just purchased a 900 Zen.  Any suggestions on providing instruction, starting with set up and working to follow through.  I haven't an idea where to start but want to help.

Get her a Nerf football and teach her to throw an underhanded spiral to herself.  Then find her an instructor. .

Good training tool, thanks for the tip.   She throws fairly straight which might work well on spare shooting.

The nerf football idea works and is easy to do inside.  Is her grip fingertip or conventional?  Most of the women I've seen that throw a straighter ball tend to let their wrist collapse back, which brings their fingers above the mid-line of the ball, resulting in a loss of leverage, along with possibly spinning the ball. A firm wrist, straight or slightly cupped with fingers below the mid-line, is a good starting point.  If the ball weight is correct for her wrist strength, she should be able to hold the ball at her side without her wrist breaking back.

Yes semi-finger tip, strong start a bit of cupped wrist.  Thought if she held ball at say a four o’clock position it might give a little more Lift if she would follow through the shot.  Has a tendency to short arm and wonder why there is no roll.

anybody check her ball drill to help her get the ball to skid and "flip".  If she right handed she needs a left hand setup

Drill setup is good, drilled with left handed layout. She need to work on getting around the ball to get side rotation.  A bit too much end over end and her ball speed is high.

If she's comfortable with her delivery, and it feels relatively natural, maybe just go with a drilling for an opposite hand and play the lane from the other side. Our area has a couple lady bowlers who do the back-up curve extremely well. Ball tech will compensate for her low revs, end-over-end roll, short arm delivery.

The reality of a back up ball is the fact that you wont get a lot of side roll unless you can roll your wrist under the ball.  In other words....start with the finger on the outside and cut across the bottom at release so the fingers end up on the inside as they exit the holes.  Just about any bowler I have come across that threw a back up ball had at most 30 degrees of axis rotation, but majority were around 20 degrees.  The only other way you may be able to accomplish more side roll is to have her swing her hips out of the way and open her shoulders up to free up the inside part of the ball so her arm can swing freely from out to in.
