Title: Ball Comparable to the AMF Angle Evolution Extra
Post by: Brickguy221 on August 27, 2004, 01:34:01 PM
What balls today if any, come close to doing the exact same thing the Angle Evouution Extra did, in terms of coverstock, length, torque, same type of hook, same amount of hook, same immunity to "almost never rolls out", same demolishing hit, and etc.?

I have one that has at least 900-1000 games and I want to replace it. It is getting pretty old, nicked/chipped up, but still produces. I've had the ball completely plugged and drilled with a different layout 3 times. The ball has some flat spots from improper plugging/finishing.

Any suggestions on current balls that might be very compariable to this ball?
If I recall, this ball was a light-load particle.

Here is a description of this balls contents:

Coverstock....Veer Particle
RG............2.52
Differental.. .045
Hook..........9 on a scale of 1-10 by BTM
Length........5 on a scale of 1-10 by BTM
Finish........1500 Wet Sand

in my opinion, the ball sounds very similar to the phenom unleashed by track.

Brick,

The Extra was a light load of particles on a Super-Flex base. It was probably Columbia's TEC2 coverstock. The core had a slight mass bias which adds to the potential backend, making the RG differential appear greater than the specs indicate. (One has to identify the ball you want to copy.)

So these days, I'd suspect some of the particle pearls, like DynoThane's Vendetta Particle Pearl, Storm's Depth Charge, and stronger resin pearls, like Storm's Triple X Factor, as well as some of the newer very strong resin solids, like the Bully and the Rule, (when polished lightly), MIGHT give you similar looks to the Extra.

One has to translate the Extra's performance, how you had it drilled, what changes you made to the surface and apply those to the time when you bought it and used it. Then apply those parameters to today's balls AND today's oil patterns AND amounts.

Actually I wonder if Track's Havoc (same core as the Extra) might be applicable to your search. I am not sure if Del Warren had something to do with the AMF Evolution Extra's design at that time, the year 2000. The Havoc's cover is resin solid (possibly enhanced Super-FLex, bringing it closer to the Veer particle on the Extra). The right surface prep on the Havoc might bring it close to the Extra.

Why not discuss this with Excaliber and tenpinspro, the Track experts?

How about the Victory?  Here are its specs:

Core: Four-density dual mass bias technology combined with a light-bulb inner core
Color: Deep blue/purple with silver logo
Coverstock: VEER X
RG: 2.525
Differential: .050
Hook Rating: 20+ BTM
Finish: 1500 wet sand

If you throw 16#, here's where you can get one.  It's listed as a "color blem":

Well, I agree with the Phenom Unleashed because of mass bias core!

The AMF Evo Extra was incredible ball for pattern B on the Pro Tour.

I've seen guys at the regionals say they were holding back bringing it out because it could recover so strongly on inside lines on that 43 foot shot that it was often too much.

A Victory SPT is also close but it is symmetrical and more polished than the Xtra.

I also believe that the symmetric core Brunswick Eliminator drilled with the pin high above the finger line is also close.

REgards,

Luckylefty
PS I have seen the havoc used dull and even though a very similar core it just doesn't seem to have the backend POP of the AMF Extra(still I rate as the strongest backend ball I've ever used, gives the most hit in the smallest number of boards covered).

Thanks for the help/suggestions guys. I'll look into all of this. This particular ball is everything LuckyLefty said and more. I bought one when they first came out and loved it so much that I bought a second one and had it drilled different. Then I loaned one to a friend and someone stole it from him. It's amazing that after as many games as I have bowled with this ball that it still has as much pop and pin destroying capicity today as it did the day I bought it. Over the 4 years I've had it, I've sat it in the sun 3-4 times to draw oil out, put in dawn soap and hot water which did nothing for it and the past year I have used Neo Tac Hook-It on it. Apparently it is not oil logged or it wouldn't continue to perform like it does.

AMF should have taken a look at Ebonite and their V2 Sanded and kept it on the market like Ebonite has the V2. As many people that liked this ball as well as the rest of the Evolution line, I'll never understand why AMF dropped the Evolution line. Maybe it was more bad management by AMF, I don't know. All I do know is that they had a winner and let it go.

Don't know if this helps anyone, but I forgot to mention the set-up on this ball. The Pin is 1/2" below ringfinger and CG kicked out 1 3/4" from gripline with CG in thumb quadrant because the ball has a 3 1/2" Pin. Don't know where the MB is located as the pro shop sanded it off, But I do remember it and the CG and Pin were in a straight line.

The ball is sanded to 400 grit and polished with Storms 3000 grit Ex-Tra Shine. I use it mostly on medium oil. With my low revs, the way I have the cover stock, it is perfect for me. The ball revs good in mid lane and has a hard angular back end and a hit that is as hard as anything I have owned. I have a new Depth Charge with a 2 1/4" Pin and drilled similar to the Extra and it is almost flippy on the backend. Lane conditions...oiled 40'-42' with 60 units between 8 & 8 and 10 units (I think) outside of 8.
