Newbie question , what does all the number means ?

Been hearing like board 1 , 2 , 17 ...etc those numbers on the board which and which does it refers to ? Will appreciate if someone care to enlighten me on this thks .

On a bowling lane there are a total of 39 boards. Right-handers number them from right to left and left-handers number them from left to right.

Both systems make middle arrow 20th board, so for a rightie board 5 is 5 boards in from the right edge, whilst for a leftie it's 5 boards in from the left-hand side.

I don't know what context they are using it, but here's my guess.

I believe they are referring to the boards on the lane. For example, for a right hander the second arrow from the gutter is often called 10 board, third arrow is 15 board, fourth arrow is 20, and so on.
