A sandbagging vent
« on: August 29, 2006, 12:53:43 PM »
Week 2 for my new team was last night.  I had 663 the first week, and 558 last night.  On a 10 point system, we took 10 the first week and 8 last night, so we're 18-2

I'm bowling with my cousin this year.  We've been family forever, and now we're teammates.  As we were finishing the third game last night, she leans over to the the four of us at the table and says "You know, I'm not going to want to give guys pins every week, so one of us is going to have to lay down for a week.  If everyone takes a turn, it'll all balance out."  My first thought to myself was you want me to SANDBAG??  As if!!!  If I shoot 660 or 460, it's because I'm trying on every shot with 100% effort, be it a strike or a split (I had lots of those last night).

When we finished bowling and my cousin walked away to put her equipment in her locker, another teammate of mine looked at me and said "I don't know about you, but there's no way in hell I'm laying down for ANYONE, period!"  I told her I agreed with her, and from here on out the two of us will be bowling our best no matter what happens.  I'm leadoff, she's anchor, so I guess that makes us the bookends  I served as a member of my local board for six years, follow the rule book, and I'm appalled that my cousin would even *think* I'd' go for this plan.  I didn't see her before I walked out last night (she also works at the center) but when I see her a week from Monday, I'll tell her that if she wants extra pins for the team, then they'll have to come from her and whoever else wants to dump illegally, because it's NOT going to be me.

Imho, I would take it a step further and let her know that you dont want anyone on the team sand bagging.  If you dont, your never going to know if she is just having a bad night or if she is sandbagging.  I can see that creating a lot of dramma and taking away from the fun. Its a long winter season, so hopefully you can work things out now.

good luck, and good for you!

I am just starting a new league in a new town as of last night and I saw a young man around 20? throw 3 0 counts in a row. I understand he might be new to leagues or bowling. But he is in a tough league with about 60-65% 200+ average bowlers.

You think he should take lessons or go to another league? I mean 3 gutters in a row is BS. And he was not playing the first board either.

I'm starting to think I'd been better off had I never averaged over 150... Sad, but it's true.

I'm with you though, I don't pay my money to throw low scores just to gain some cap.  Besides, it's league... these days even if you win it all what little you might get in the end isn't worth the trouble of remembering to miss an extra spare every now and then.

I've seen a guy throw four in a row.  Two whole frames.  He's a 180-ish average bowler.  He's no sandbagger, he was just pissed off and not able to think straight.

Good for you, White Dot.
I'd take it one step further and tell her that if she even considers dumping, that she should find a new team to bowl with because its not going to be with you.
