Title: Ball suggestion help.
Post by: lilpossum1 on May 04, 2015, 10:46:00 AM
Ok, let me start off by saying I don't know what I need, but I have somewhat of an idea. I bowl on older wooden lanes. The shot is wildly inconsistent. The lanes are completely stripped on Tuesdays, oiled for league that night, stripped back 15 feet for Thursday's, the just oiled on top of that for the rest of the leagues until Tuesday. By the time my Sunday league rolls around, I never know what I am going to see. I could be bowling on a flood with massive carry down or a shot with burnt heads. Usually it is somewhere in the middle. The lanes are oiled with a squirt bottle and a mop, so the lanes can be wildly inconsistent. I think I need to treat my lane conditions as if they are tough tournament conditions and go straighter with control, but if anyone has any ideas, i would love to hear them. Any ball suggestions?

I'm bowling in a house with similar conditions (wood) this summer and trying to figure out the same thing. They do use a machine but the lanes are only stripped once a week and then fresh head oil applied two other days a week. I never know what is coming last week they had a large tournament coming in so they just put additional head oil down over the 47 ft sport shot for us to bowl on. That was interesting. 2 weeks ago any ball that got outside of 12 was just DOA due to no oil. I ordered a Arson Low Flare to combat the dry out of control version there hoping that will help blend it out but I won't get to test it out until Tuesday

I was thinking about the iq tour solid, but I don't know if it is stronger than what I really want for a benchmark ball. I was something between my misfit pearl and original mastermind.

I bowl on very old wood lanes, probably 20 years or so.  The lanes have been resurfaced several times and I heard that they can't cut it down any more because the wood is too thin.  They do use a very good oiling machine, but they lay down very little volume, so the wood soaks the oil like a sponge.  I have tried every ball that I have, from strong to plastic, and have finally found something that is somewhat consistent, The SuperNatural.

Something solid, something symmetrical.

Adjust surface, until you get something you like.

A couple of balls I'd go with:

Hyroad, hysteria, venom shock, melee(any of that line) just to name a few.  Motiv probably has quite a few good options for this condition.

Ahh, been down this road before
20+ years at a similar place
ended up with a Hammer  "taboo spare" ball
spare ball with a weight block, i hand scuffed it a little bit as it was slightly over/under
i was able to play much straighter and it carried well
but this place was toast outside of 10
the arson low flare was also serviceable, but i had adjusted the surface with polish and a longer pin-pap layout
like Bill said, symmetric, rolly, probably polished and a longer pin layout will be the direction you will want to go

Usually the shot is slightly on the slick side of medium. I couldn't get by with plastic. I was throwing a primal rage oob surface and it was fine, but I wouldn't call it great. I sanded it to 2000 and the control helped a bit, but I still want something more even and less prone to jumping through the face

try your primal at 1000 + polish
it will help get through the heads and still have some teeth to control the over/under
if you want to try another piece, the hammer arson low flare is weaker and once you tune the surface to what you need, its a great piece
i always know where its going once it leaves my hand
but with any new piece, you have to be willing to give it a few tries with surface adjustments.

I will give that surface a try. Thanks. Really looking a that melee cross now though...
