A TRUE BOWLER
« on: March 11, 2008, 09:25:06 PM »
I will repost this in the PBA Forum but i thought i would start it here for the sheer amount of hits. How nice would it be for the PBA, once a year, to hold a tournament that uses plastic bowling balls only. For one week we can see the pure and true bowlers seperate themselves from the ones who rely more on technology. This tournament should be held at a center that has wood lanes so that conditions can accurately match up to those 30 plus years ago. Let me know what you think of this idea. Thanks!

To me its not about the equipment. The equipment has nothing to do with the scores. ITS THE LANE CONDITIONS that is being put out. You can put a shot out there to completely shut out today's equipment.

Today's game is a lot more guessing in trying to figure out what the lanes are doing and either change their line, adjust how they get through the ball, change balls, play straighter up, play more of an inside shot, or whatever. You throw plastic like the old days, there was only pretty much one shot; down and in.

Yesterday's game was based on accuracy, but today's game is a lot more thinking.

Today's game doesn't require more thinking than it use to, it has always been about accuracy, and figuring out how to play a shot, and guessing how the shot is going to change over the course of a game.  Those doubting the oldtimers ability to adjust are ignoring the facts.  The facts are that many of the top bowlers on tour today are those old timers, who started their careers during Earls era, and you can see how their games have evolved.  First and foremost, they are some of the most accurate on tour.  Norm Duke, Pete Weber, Parker Bohn, WRW are all old school bowlers that started in the plastic/rubber era.  They won before, they won after, just like the other greats would have done.

Bowling is a rare sport in which you have players with the longevity to show how the old stacks up with the new over the evolution of the game, and those old school guys bring it as well as anybody.

Right on the money.

I believe Tommy Baker has bowled in more games than anybody ever on tour, and he's still at it.

How about we force em to use plastic on the old 50 foot TOC shot.

THAT would be fun.

I can remember Bo Burton Jr. commenting on how the PBA was considering adding weight to the pins by inserting a metal rod. Even the PBA acknowledged that too much emphasis was being put on ball technology and not enough skill. The only thing oil patterns do are put a premium on hitting your target. The strength of the ball does not change.

I think the pba needs to change period. I ve watched old videos where the prize money in the early 90's and possibly before where the prize money was the same.... not a good sign if you ever thought you could go pro! (some are a lot more but most are still 10,000$)

this is my favorite quote of all time as it applies to EVERYTHING :

"all things change and we change with them" (of course that was actually originally in latin but it still applies today.

why did pros ever change to urethane? because they scored higher when the lane conditions changed... same thing with today only the balls are MUCH stronger... only difference is the inaccurate guy has a better chance.... doesnt make him better, the guys you truly are accurate will always be on top. thats just how boling is.

I have been bowling a long time and seen all of the players your are talking about. Rhino Page is very talented player, one of the best young players on tour, but to compare him to anybody that has won 40+ PBA titles from an era where they had to compete against 200+ guys each week, is one of the dumbest things I have read in a long time. He might be that good some day, but right now he couldn't carry any of the top 20 players of all times bag. I think that also goes for Tommy Jones too.

A lot of the great players in bowling history were smart tough competitors that would adapt and change. They could compete in any era and to say any different is ignorant, disrespectful and down right silly.

wood lanes...REALLY...lefty's would either have an advantage or be shut out!

The right side track...always more WORN on wood...not an even playing field!
