Title: Ballreviews Needs Your Suggestions For Updating The Site
Post by: Ballreviews on April 22, 2008, 03:49:24 AM
Hello Everyone-

We are looking to update the site with new features, and a better forum to keep Ballreviews as the best ball review site out there.  We are looking to add reviews for shoes, bags, and accessories.   Also we are going to implement video and picture uploads.  We are looking to you guys for any suggestions you have for the following categories - Layout, Content, Navigation of the site, and Forum Tools.  Please feel free to post any suggestions you have for these categories, but try to keep it short and sweet.

Example post:  Forum Tool - I would like to have a better way of searching the forum.

We thank you for your suggestions, and help in making Ballreviews the best it can be.

PBA/USBC News - Something automatic in a dedicated read only type forum.

Some sites have users post them, but then the topic gets hijacked. Just a forum where a moderator can update a forum for USBC news or PBA news.

If you're going to allow videos, then some kind of voting system would be good, with each user limited to one vote.

I wouldn't mind seeing the ability for different color schemes, or just a change of the color scheme anyway, new layouts would be cool too. Just switch it up a bit, the site seems a little boring right now.

Not to knock a site I don't really participate in, but these forums (http://"http://www.bowlingballexchange.com/showthread.php?s=2166f4942aa5233a1ff7601fdd07aafc&t=26808") are significantly more work for me to read quickly than the ones here.  The layout is simple and more than effective.  No obnoxious avatars to take up space, create visual noise, or slow down page loading.  No gigantic "user info" box before each and every post, limiting the amount of space the actual content takes up.  There's a tremendous amount of empty space on that page, it's just wasteful.  The additional information that's listed for those users would more than fit under their usernames using the existing layout.

I like the simplicity of this site.  There's one ad at the top and one at the bottom and links to sponsors on the left.

The color scheme is simple and easy to read.  Fonts are well-behaved and appropriately sized.  No pale fonts on a dark background, no teeny text.

I come here for the content, not the visuals.  As cool as avatars may be to 18-year-olds on Myspace, they add zero useful content to the site.

That said, I'd like to see a more uniform and standardized format for the For Sale listings.  It's a pain to search for "L/LM" and "Legends/Lanemasters" and "lane masters" and "lane mast".  Or for "Brunswick", "Big B", "Bruns",... .  Unfortunately, I can't think of any really good ways to get around that problem that also scales well to the number of manufacturers and the plethora of balls that each puts out.

One feature that I'd like is whatever bit does the formatting for long URLs to automatically generate properly formed URL tags with some short text instead of a 200-character long URL string.  Totally screws with the word wrapping.  Maybe it's my Mac, but I don't think so.  Basically, if someone puts in a really long URL, say, longer than 50 characters, a {url="..."}text{/url} tag is automatically generated and put in its place.

I, honestly, think that adding reviews for shoes is a bit too much. I do like some of the ideas so far though, like making the profile icon different if the person actually has a profile (thought trolls will still just put like 1 letter to make people mad), and video links. Keep up the good ideas guys, and thanks BR for listening to the people.

I like the simplicity of the site but it would be cool to be able to pick your own color scheme.
I think it would also be fun if users could post a picture that appeared with their posts.
I like the idea of having having other reviews than balls because it would be helpful to know how shoes fit others or how a bag holds up.
I think a way to search the forums would be good too.
I think the idea I read about each manufacture having a section that they controlled would be good.  They could post videos and stuff.

Well said, Shelley.  Those are my feelings too.  I like the KISS method for webpages and hate the sites with too much video or picture content.  I prefer forums to be easy to read and fast loading for those still on dial-up or with older computers.

If there is a way to implement a date frame to the Search feature, that would be helpful (like searching between 01 Jan 05 to 01 Jun 06 in specific forums).

If you could, you bet. I'm one of maybe many, that like the simple, no "video game" look. I come here to read a post, post from time to time. If I want to see avatars, anything "fancy", I'd go to youtube or the like.

I do agree, date searches, from X day/month to Y day/month.

Not possible I'm sure, but make the posters have a profile, no profile, no posting. Hard to suggest things when we know nothing about the person, sure, they should put it in, but many are either to lazy or just don't know better.

Posts have max length of time, in the F/S section. IMO, there's no reason to have a post that's over 15-20 days old. If you still have the ball or item, delete the post and start a new thread.

Oh, and please, try to keep the older posts in the equipment and misc bowling forums, if at all possible.  There is a wealth of knowledge available there if you can properly search for it and have the time to do so.

That shouldn't be a problem (knock on wood) since we have already made the decision that any upgrades must keep all content and user data. It will obviously make things a little more difficult but those are the things that make BR what it is.

Please find a way to teach people the proper way to use quotes.  You only need to repeat the relevant part.  It's almost impossible to read a quote of a quote of a quote of a quote...  Also, if you're making a general post, you don't need to quote at all.

Also, find a way to limit the TTT's and bump's people put on posts?  Nothing worse than seeing someone bump a sale item 10 times in a day.

I'd like to make it impossible for posters to remove their own posts.  Might keep certain people more even tempered.  Also reduces the pain of seeing 100 informative posts disappear because the original poster decided to delete the topic.

More practical: Maybe a tutorial teaching people how to use profiles, messages, where the forums are so they don't post questions in the reviews...

Although we have the search hack, it would be nice to make it easier to search for old posts and have your preferences automatically be set to read ALL of the posts.

So if I posted something, anything, then you won't allow me to delete my OWN posts ? So this means once someone has sold the balls they have, we are stuck with that thread for as long as...? who knows ?

If I can't delete my own posts, then that's the last time I post. Childish name calling is the only reason I delete my posts or the ball/patch etc has sold. Gee, I didn't realize your middle name was Marx.

Wow, what bug flew up your butt?  Nothing wrong with locking a post that gets off topic, but when you delete, sometimes many interesting posts go with it.  I hate typing several long informative posts only to have someone delete the entire post when someone could have learned something from some of the posts.

I support this, too. BR.com might look a bit dull, but the non-presence of pictures and visual rubbish all the time that takes space and download capacity is a very handy thing about this site. At best, I'd allow small (!) avatars. A limit to signature size (number of lines/symbols/type size) would IMHO also something to think about.

Image and video upload would be a nice feature, but since frequent posters have most of the time access to external web platforms I do not think that it is really necessary - as long as external links work. It keeps this forum site, or the public part, "clean" and sleek. I have seen horrible forums where (probably mostly youth) users flooded the site with tons of visuals, animations, even sound - but content was negligible. Please do not fall into this trap with BR.com!

Individual color choices (for local view) might be an option, though, the grey and white format looks a bit dull - but the layout is very effective, and the separation between the "normal" and sales forums had also been a nice step to keep the forums clean and on focus. Maybe a better advertising about this on the home page would be another step?

Another suggestion: Maybe introduce a review section for exotic pieces - like (very) old balls, small brands or overseas material, a kind of catch-all. Since all ball entries are pre-determined, only the forums can be used to post an impression, and the entry will soon get lost.

sure has been suggested before but I'll just say it... maybe again:
I'd like to have more sophisticated forum itself... with marking if threads have new answers; jumpin to the newest unread answer etc.
_The whole BR-gforum is big... and somtimes keeping track of a highley and strong discussed topic is hard

I think the new features like shoes etc will be nice and videos surely will not hurt the whole thing.

As far as I'm concerned, this is the Gold Standard for bowling related sites.  Descriptive links are well organized on the left.  The majority of the page is dedicated to content on both the Main page and content pages.  Colors, although not dramatic, are easy on the eyes.  Navigating to any section from any other section is very intuitive.

Minor improvements would be to make the search function cover more than the current 30 day maximum.  I know it slows down the PCs' (not sure what it might do to your servers), but sometimes you just have to go back further than a month.

In an attempt to limit useless content, maybe a pro shop or industry section would be helpful.  This would be an elite section where a second login would be required to perform a post.  Only pro shops, PBA members, USBC upper level management, manufacturer's reps, certified coaches (no lower than silver) and other demonstrated industry professionals can post in this forum.  It would be read only to the rest of us.

Great ideas that I fully support so far are:  Walter56 and his idea to have reliable posters delete topics.  I’d add the ability to consolidate duplicate topics within a forum.  Color-coding the profile button is absolute genius.   I'm warming up to the idea of a College forum.

There was a paragraph here dealing with Avatars, videos, signatures, and grammar.  I deleted it so I wouldn't insult anyone.

Not sure that reviews of shoes / bags / accessories is a useful topic.

**I would like to see a searchable section with specs and drill sheets from retired equipment.

**I also would like to be able to search (and view all the replies) posts older than 30 days directly though this site.

**A small sections where "auctions" can be created for equipment/etc.  BR members able to bid and a count-down timer.

I would like to comment on the idea of adding pictures and videos to the site.  I can see why you would want those things, it'd be nice to simply throw a small 160x160 picture of the layout up here instead of trying to fake it with dashes or periods to get around the insatiable appetite of the whitespace-eater.

But, like avatars, that would increase the size of the pages.  Larger pages means more bandwidth.  More bandwidth means increased hosting costs.  Increased hosting costs must be offset by increased ad revenue.  That means more ads.  We currently have exactly two ads on each page, one small one at the top, one small one at the bottom.  That's awesome.  How many forums put ads between posts or cover the whole first screenful of a page with ads?  Isn't that obnoxious?  How many more ads would you be willing to put up with to add a feature that's already covered by links to sites like Imageshack and Youtube?

You want to change your color preferences?  Fine.  Doesn't make a difference to the way I see the page.  You want to make the site slower and loaded with ads (which are served by a site which may be slow as well, further decreasing load times)?  How fscking stupid can you get?

My wishes for this site:
1.) Improved search features. It's nice to go back and read posts or find information from more than 120 days ago. Currently, I have to go the the FAQ, and click on the link ... then select my search preferences. Then finally search in the archives for a post. It shouldn't be that hard.
2.) A "sticky" for the BallReviews FAQ. It should always be at the top of the Misc - Bowling Related forum. Even better would be a direct link to the post on the front page of the site.
3.) Improved moderation and enforcement of the sites rules. There are a few posters here that are intelligent, impartial, and thus able to serve as part-time moderators. CharlesT, Ragnar, and a couple others come to mind ...
4.) Bring back Sawbones. I miss his thought provoking topics and intelligent discussion.
5.) I like the current simple interface. It's fast,a nd easy to read. However, adding just a couple of items like no. of posts, the ability to go to the last page following a posted reply, etc. would be beneficial.

My $0.02 worth. Thanks for reading.

The FAQ is actually already stickied on the "Misc-Bowling Related" forum though I think someone suggested at one point actually using the html version and linking to it from the left nav.

Either eliminate or create a separate section for irksome venom-loaded religion bashing posts, as well as posts on politics, but particularly religion.

It just seems that often times religion bashing dominates this site, instead of the intended concept, which is bowling.

Thank you.

First of all, I think Ballreviews is the best bowling website there is.

I like the simplicity of the interface.

I don't know if this site supports embedded stuff in posts. It should, I think.

A coaching forum could be good.

A way for extra valuable posts to get more visibility would be welcome.

A better search function would be good. I don't know how to find posts that are more than a year old. But I would like to be able to find them.

That's it for now.

I don't know if this has already been said, if so I apologise.

I'd like to be able to go directly to the last post of any thread.  I always look at the latest posts and it would be useful to be able to click on a button to go to the last unread post in the thread thereby avoiding the tedious scroll through many replies that I've already read.

Thanks.

Not a bad idea - a template with basic bowler information in a unified format that allows "at a glance" to check specs for reference - mandatory for reviews? PAP, speed, axis tilt, etc.

Could also be in addition to a more complex individual profile, or just a new header in the profiles themselves.

BTW: nice to see that the FAQ section has found its prominent and deserved place at the misc. section's top. Very good move

1 - add posts counts under your username
2 - maybe add a pba experience forum
3 - different background to the site/forums or at least being able to pick certain ones

And most of all, add some sort of a feedback system for buyers and sellers on here. If you had a successful transaction you can get +1 rating and have the buyer/seller leave a little comment that only you can see.

Allow each user to choose whether or not they want to display others' signatures (and avatars if you go that route, though I agree that avatars add nothing to the site but increase bandwidth and hosting costs)

If not a template, at least a set of suggested questions to be answered when posting a review.

When posting, I'd like to see a third check box option "Check here to be notified of any replies to this topic once per day" or simply leave the current setup but add a user preference that allows each user to determine how often they want to be notified of new posts on topics they are "watching".

Otherwise, on the personal messages page, add a link/button driven by javascript that allows me to "select all" or "unselect all".  I can then "select all" 1893 messages, and uncheck the 2 or 3 I want to keep.

Wrap page content pieces in div tags with unique id attributes that follow a consistent naming scheme across the site.  HTML tags for post list tables, link sections, etc. should likewise have distinct id's and classes in a consistent manner not specific to style.  Looking at the existing code, the site is about halfway there already.  For example, stay away from things like class="ContentHeadingBlue", instead use class="PostHeaderBar" instead. This would allow users to write and apply their own style sheets to skin/color/layout the site any way that suited their fancy.  Using names that describe what an item in the page does (PostHeaderBar) versus how it should look (ContentHeadingBlue) will help users build style sheets.  Create a forum for exchanging stylesheets so members can share their work.

Heck, if you wrap all signatures in a span class="signature", I can take care of ignoring other users' signatures myself (display="none"), though the site won't reap the benefits of decreased bandwidth that way.

How about an alternate format for viewing on PDA's available at http://pda.ballreviews.com

Actually, the id's and classes you see were strictly for April Fool's last year when I sent the homepage back to the old blue-black format*. Needless to say, an upgrade means bringing everything into 4.01 or possibly xhtml 1.0 compliance and seperating code and design. I'll try to make sure we make things simple for those GreaseMonkey users out there too. Hopefully, it will at least be easier than trying to format a myspace page with inline css.

*Note: I wasn't actually around for the old blue-black format but thanks to archive.org, I got the basic idea.

1. Add a way to cross reference for sale posts - for example - allow the user to make ONE for sale post - but check the boxes for
Brunswick
Storm
15 Pound
14 Pound
New

2. A way to flag/vote on posts that are
a. worthy of being included in the all time FAQ section of ball reviews, or...
b. ones that moderaters need to check on.

That's it for now...

http://www.thephotoforum.com/forum/

This uses Vbulletin and in my opinion is the model for a great forum, take a look around the forum, everyone has avatars, and image signatures (Which are limited to a specific size by the mods)... You can post pictures as well as vids in the threads. It is a well modded site and one of the best forums I am on

I don't see much improvement necessary for this site as it is definitely the best site of its kind. The only thing that could be improved concerns the ball reviews. For ball reviews, I go to bowlingballreviews.com although that site does not have much participation and does definitely not compare with ballreviews but their ball reviews are well structured and it is easier to compare balls.

Can we have the ability rate the helpfulness of the reviews of any ball? (Similar to amazon.com's "Did you find this review helpful?" functionality).

I see too many reviews that talk about how someone doesn't actually own the ball (their friend does), but it hits like a truck and they're going to get one right away. There's never any link to the layout, lane conditions, bowlers specs, etc.

Perhaps a template should be mandated for all reviews to help enhance the quality of the evaluations presented.

This site needs very little improvement. It already gets 99 percent of the things right.

Some minor grievances, much of which has already been mentioned:

1) Post counts.

2) The ability to click directly to page 2,3,4,etc. on the forum fronts, rather than having to click on the main topic, THEN click on the last page.

3) Moderation issues. The Non-Bowling forum is basically useless due to poor poster behavior. Too much crap to wade through and I never visit it. Secondary to that are the dive-bombers that go into one manufacturer's forum simply to stir up trouble because they're a fan of a rival.

4) Expansion of the search feature beyond 30 days without having to go through a hack to do it.

5) Reviews of overseas balls. There's so much Brunswick, Storm and MoRich stuff coming into the U.S. market now that it would make sense.

Other than that, you're golden.

{b]Two suggestions here: First one is to mark the threads in which we have postd so we know if we've been there or not. Second is an "anything goes" type of forum where there is virtually no moderation and access only given to certain individuals who have a certain number of posts and can verify their age. That would mean no censors and such.

You should add a "my posts" tab on the front page where your profile, signature, messages, etc. is. This way you can just click on your posts you have created in say the last 5-10 days instead of having to find them in the lists. It would be easier to "ttt" them or edit them if you desired. Thanks.

1. The My Post tab is a great idea. Sometimes I just want to edit a post from a few weeks ago, this would make it easier.
2. Get rid of the other crap, bowling only.
3. vBulletin for sure.
4. A better for sale section. Somehow make some guidelines when posting..ie - all for sale posts must include, specs, photos, pricing....etc. I hate playing this back and forth game with people.
5. The video and photo section would be great.
6. Chatroom?
7. Raffles, prizes, or give-a-ways
8. Better up to date tournament sections from all over the US
9. Inbox - Id like to view my sent messages, so I can see what I quoted someone on ball pricing.
10. More Moderators, locked threas when balls get sold, and maybe a section that has external links to anything bowling - ie, websites that sell equipment, tournament websites, and what not.

just thought of another suggestion: i have gone to your ball review site many times and the vast majority of the revieews are way too positive(not all balls are great are they?) within the framework of the sight a numerical or star rating should be used to guide the reader AND the reader should automatically know the reviewers profile i.e. average, yrs bowled style etc

Don't know if it's been mentioned here or not.  ANd not sure how easy it would be to do, But, how bout a sticky thread like this at the "Buyer-Seller feedback" listed with the guys who've not lived up to their end of the bargains.  I've been seeing a lot of bad or real slow deals here lately & it could be a useful tool before buying from someone.

I also posted this in the "Comments and Suggestions" topic. As the Buyer/Seller section grows with more and more complaints, I really feel something like this section is VERY much needed.

"Wondering if you could set up a thread, either where we as members or you as Admin, could post the user name and why, for each Bad Transaction done ? Maybe have it last for 3 months or some time frame, your choice.

I think, if you had the time, it'd be better if it were Admin who posted names and why, that way we wouldn't get into any "contest" that was a misunderstanding but more a real "rip-off" artist.

There has been several, lately and this way others could see the problems and decide for themselves if they wanted to deal with those folks.

Items listed might include, real name, address or city/state only.

Just a thought."

I used to moderate forums and ran one.  This is a harder job than it looks.

I notice most of you want a more versatile system.  It might be beneficial to work with PHPBB which will help on moderation and on the expandability of the forums.  Thing is, I don't know how portable this system is or how you'd transfer gear.

The idea is a tough one, but a idea none-the-less.

Don't know if this has been said here or not, but how about a forum section devoted to mechanics.  I know there are alot of mechanics who frequent this site, and why not allow them to discuss machines, proper maitenance/repair to machines.  Pin monkeys/chasers/mechanics need not be overlooked.

I don't think it's broken...so don't try to fix it.

We have a nice home here at BR.  I've been on many other sites out there that have made major modifications at one time or another and saw nothing in return.

The chat idea is great.  My only concern is that it doesn't become the demise for this site as it did for a few others.

I actually enjoy reading profiles, and when I want to buy something or trade something with somebody, I want some kind of profile, like name, and where they live, bowling stats, etc. Personally, it would make me more confident in buying or trading with people.

I just have one i'd like to add, the option to change the white background to a different color. I don't know if it is possible but I think it would be really nice to be able to select a color scheme, keeping the same format but just having some options.

I personally prefer dark colors on screens and especially on forums, I feel it is easier on the eyes to have a back background and light colored text on it.

Hi there.
Just an observation. It seems that there are a lot of bias reviews.Of course someone on the staff of some bowling ball manufacturer company is going to say great things about their equipment. What else are they gonna say?
Fact is the average person like myself who did horribly in math and knows nothing about geometry or drilling gets more confused than informed.Especially when EVERYONE says the equipment they use is the BEST!
I don't know about anyone else, but I don't have 200 plus bucks to throw down on every ball that comes out that is supposed to be better than the previous one.And how does one find someone to drill a ball that knows how you bowl if they've never acutually SEEN me bowl? I'm open for suggestions.
Thanks for your time.

It would be great if you could make the miscellaneous non-bowling related section    an opt in whether or not you see those posts on the "Recent Posts" on the main page.

So if you click yes in your profile it shows the all most recent posts, if you click no, you only see the bowling posts. Give members the option to see it, like their ignore list.

Signatures should be limitted to the number of lines that is has.  There is not need to list 20 Balls that you may have and your averages in every league that you have ever bowled in your lifetime.  Some signatures last a full page!!  This is not needed, it is just too much!

How about the ability to see who is signed on in alphabetical order with the total time at the end of the name.  This could be in the form of a link that would lead to a new window, and if the page is too long due to too many people on at the same time, a search function could be added.

I really don't care who else is signed on &/or how many posts they have.  It doesn't matter & it's called privacy.

My suggestion for the ball review section is for each ball there be a release date so we know how old it is.  But like TCP said, nothing has really been done that's been suggested.  Flame away.

On edit:  I do look for the earliest review to get an idea, but still would be nice to see the release date.  JMO.

Since this is a ball review site....

A standard format for writing a review would be appreciated. Some items to include are layout information, bowler's PAP, surface prep and lane conditions. I'm sure others can elaborate.

Reviews that consist of "This ball is the best ball ever and I just shot 300 with it and my average went up 25 pins with it and it hits like a truck go buy it now." are entirely useless and should be deleted. They do nothing but diminsh the site.

I think you are wrong on the moderation, with the way some on here attack others, and the language used or when they try to diguise the intent of the words by only using part of the words.

Moderation....but I still think that leaving it up to individuals in the form of the ignore list is enough.

Have we thought about updated to a new forum mode, a few of the other forums I am on are using vBulletin. Very easy to use, and great for posting all types of pics, links, and so on.

Such implementation likely would open up a can of worms, as many OPs unwilling to accept others' point of view would then delete at will all replies in line with their own way of thinking.

It already happened.  Maybe not by the author of thread, but by BRTech or some mod.  It was Brunsnick's Cr system figjam thread in the Brunswick forum.  There was some banter going back & forth & any reply post w/banter in it was deleted.  It was 6 pages long at one point & it's now only 2.....  You can see by the amount of views that there were alot more pages than just 2.  Funny, in the Lane 1 forum the whole threads were deleted....

If you're actually looking to make this site better, here's what IMHO you need to do.

First, you NEED moderators...actual RESPONSIBLE, active ones. Anyone frequenting this site should be able to tell who is qualified for such a spot and who isn't.

Second, make it so the non-bowling related posts don't get posted on the homepage - this is a bowling site, and anyone wanting to discuss non-bowling topics can just as easily go to that section.

I like the star system to rate how good  or how bad the reviews are on the products. 1 to 5 stars.Makes it a lot easier to know how good it is.

I second the suggestion of keeping the non bowling related topics/replies off the homepage. I frequent that section often and it annoys me to see those debates continually plastered on the home page. I can simply go to the forum to see what is being discussed.

I would like to see a subsection for each ball company where technical aspects can be discussed. Hopefully BR can extend an invite to each company to have an insider join us to set the record straight and generally provide insight.

Thanks for staying ahead of the curve,
Joe.

I would like to see a  tutorial section set up specifically on  ball drilling, layouts and techniques as well as surface adjustments by hand and with a ball spinner.I think these sections could help out the fellow bowler who can't afford to run to the pro shop all the time just for minor adjustments that he can do himself.

Well, it might not prevent the truck thing, but it could make orientation easier - at least concerning specs of the specific ball, player, layout, etc. Some standardized format would not be a bad idea, though.

while i realize that off bowling topic forums may be on every other site, my point is that this is a bowling site. in my opinion if you are going to have a non bowling related forum at least keep it off the homepage (recent posts)

My suggestion is when doing a search, people should be able to go back further than just thirty days.  I've joined this website maybe about one and half months, and the first thing I did was do a search to make sure nobody posted a topic on something that I could be interested in.  I've seen from other websites, newbies getting flamed for not doing a search before posting a topic.  Now someone who is a newbie to this forum, could post a topic that already have been discussed, and that person would have no idea.  Then you could have your so called veterans, who been on here for a while getting frustrated and whole ignore the topic, because they are tired of the same subject popping up over, and over, and over again.  I know from other forums I've been on, that some of their searches go back two years, or even back to the point when the website was created.

When on "Ball Manufacturers" whether it be Hammer, Storm, Bruns, etc... Why don''t you have a link to their specific website?  There is a link to an online shop if you want to buy it, but how about their website.  I think that would be cool, no?

I think by adding a feature where finding your own post would be easier for adding updates and stuff.  Have this feature on the messages page.  So when you check your messages you would have a link that gives you a list of all your posts and just clicking on them would get you there..

Possibly some kind or feedback feature like ebay with points so you can see easier who is good to trust and not to trust.
