conventional grip?
« on: September 08, 2009, 10:00:00 AM »
today I had a so-so practice. After a few games I decided to try a game with a 14 lb house ball (Would be 15 but none of them fit my hand). I don't know if it was the consistency of the plastic house ball but noticed while the thumb may have been a tad too loose how much easier the ball came out with using a conventional grip. Even though I struggled through a few frames to find where to stand and throw the ball I started stringing strikes with this beaten up house ball. Ended up shooting a respectable 222 game with it. Out of the other 10 or so games was almost better then most all the games I shot with my own equipment.

I'm not thinking of going to using plastic for strike balls or thinking conventional grips are better then finger tipped. I felt like I was more inside the ball and could get a perfect release when I was releasing it.

How much does he hook it?  Does he us conventional over fingertip to cut down on revs?

All I know is even though outside of 8ish was dry the plastic house ball gave me a superb reaction but I also noticed that I could actually release it how I wanted every time. I used to kill my hand trying to throw a conventional house ball finger tipped and realized why I was in pain so tried it how it's supposed to be. One thing I was thinking about it how much greater flexibility in my fingers I had. It never hurt, something that has been bothering me with finger tipped grip. I tried a reverse pitch once to try and help these problems but hurt my game more then it helped. Also, I felt like even though I was getting it through the front portion of the lane because it was a tough, mediocre quality plastic house ball I could aim better with it also without naturally ripping through the finger holes like finger tipped grip.
I have some old resin balls I don't use anymore for either being old or the grip doesn't feel right. I may actually grab an old ball and get the fingers plugged and try a conventional grip using my normal release. Also might add, former pba touring pro Chris Warren went to a conventional grip and from what I saw I didn't notice a difference in revs when I watched him.

you sure it was the grip and not the drop in weight?

Yes because I have an older 14 pound plastic ball (White Dot) drilled finger tipped grip and sometimes over the years would take it to use as a strike ball and never had much success with it.

Perhaps the looser thumbhole in the house ball compensates for the fact you may be gripping the ball.

If I throw a ball with too large of a thumbhole, sometimes it slides off no matter how hard I grip it.  At times this results in a better release because I can't tug or pull it.

I'd suggest working on relaxing your grip when throwing your own equipment and see if that helps.
