a ball comparison
« on: February 16, 2005, 01:10:36 AM »
Bowled with the driller last night and he had just punched up a Bully and a Dirty Bomb.  He didn't use the DB (you'll soon hear why) and started with a Goliath.  Now you must understand a couple of things; first, Rich is a very good player and second he has a different track: PAP is about 4 over and 2 up, very low track (looks about like a spinner, but isn't).  Bowled on pretty heavy oil, about 40 foot crown shot.  With the Goliath he had a great shot, standing about 23 to 11 at the arrows.  Shot 258 the first game (could easily have been 300), then changed to the Bully.  This ball hooked at least 10 boards more than the Goliath.  Pin by ring, CG very slightly towards palm. (didn't see the pattern on the Goliath, but I think it was close to the same).  It would start hooking in the oil and looked almost like it hesitated, then hooked more when it hit dry.  Goliath had a smooth arc, Bully arced, but with a violent change of direction that kept turning the entire last 40 (or more) feet of lane.  Rich didn't use the Dirty Bomb because (he said) it would outhook the Bully.  He also has a Big Bully waiting for the drill until he figures out what to do with it.  Oh, yeah, both his Goliath and Bully were at about an 800 grit finish.

BTW, I was using my Super Carbide Bomb and had a great shot, but covered no where near the boards that the Bully did.  A bit more than the Goliath, but not a lot.

I almost feel there's not enough info here to judge anything.

WHat's Rich like in revs, ball speed, axis tilt, roation (or close approximations)?

Heavy oil? Length, wet/dry, blend, reerse block?

Bully is like Rule in that it has strong new cover with asymmetric core.
Goliath is oiler of first magnitude, but much stronger than Bully, in general.

Makes me wonder what is really going on here?
Setting us for a joke or punch line?

If Rich has enough hand to make same drilled, same cover prep'ed Bully hook more than Goliath then there wasn't enough oil for Ric to use the Goliath. Then comparison is invalid.

I assume he has more hand and ball speed than you do, Rags,

Charlest, no punch line here. Rich can throw (with accuracy) anywhere between (approx) 14 to 21 (or more) MPH.  He has more revs than me, but is by no means a power player.  Normally has a lot of tilt, not a lot of rotation, but can vary both.  As I said, the guy is flat out good - enormously versatile.  To illustrate, he shot a 3-6 with his Goliath and threw it so straight that he whistled by the 3 pin.  Interesting thing is that a lot of balls that hook out of other folks hand won't hook a lot for him, but the opposite is also true.  As to oil I covered that - heavy, 40 foot crown; the basic shot is somewhere between 11 and 14 (depends on what lane, normally I'm playing about 11).  He used the Bully and the Goliath on the same night, same league - Goliath first game, Bully second and, say what you will, the Bully was at least 10 boards the stronger of the two.  The move on the Bully was amazing - at about 20 feet it was hooking (in the oil) and (as I said) seemed to hesitate slightly when it came out of oil into dry, then continued hooking.  As to not enough oil for the Goliath, well, I'm using my SCB and hooking the ball about the same as the Goliath - it comes back with plenty of oil rings.  I don't know the units - it's not a true flood, but it's heavy enough that most stuff, played inside, skids until it hits dry.
