Secretary and Treasurer Fee
« on: April 23, 2018, 10:29:17 AM »
As we are in the final weeks of the season trying to see how much the Secretary and Treasurer make in your leagues.

I have one league 5 person team, 40+ team secretary makes 44 cents per bowler per week (about $3200 for the year) while the treasurer makes 26 cents ($1950 approx for year).

Another League 5 person team 18 teams, and both secretary and treasure make an even $550 per the season.

The leagues I’m in basically pay the treasurer/secretary enough to pay for their lineage.

$3200 and $1950 are INSANE.

Dear God what?  Most of the time the houses do it now and I have a problem with even paying their lineage for the year just for them to walk through and collect envelopes and hand them to the desk and be done?  Sign me up!  2 grand to be a league secretary?  I didn't know that kind of nonsense existed.

I don't know of a league that the secretary and treasure are handled by two different people. We have one officer that does both.

The secretaries job is much easier now that generally house computers compute all the standings and league averages. Long ago when you had to do it all by hand it was quite a job.

I would not want to be the treasure. While the majority of teams simply pay in full each week there are also many who are constantly behind. Some teams you have to hunt down to get their envelopes each week. You are constantly after people to catch up.

Plus you have to count the cash, checks, and make a deposit to the house that night. And then file monthly financial reports to league officers, work out payouts, get the money at the end of the year and put in envelopes for each team.

All that being said the amounts you listed seem very high. Most the leagues I have been in pay around $500 a year to do both duties. Normally around 35 cents a bowler per night.

In my 2 leagues, the treasurer is still counting the money and ensuring it’s all there before it’s given to the house. The treasurer does have some work to do there, and covering their lineage seems fair.

I did run a small sport shot league for a couple years that was small enough for the house to collect the money themselves (20 people). I didn’t take out any expenses for that, I had very little to do.

Yeah in that case sure, but I've bowled in leagues recently where all the secretary does is collect envelopes and take them to the desk and still gets their lineage paid for.

I have been a league secretary for many years now.  Here is what I do every year.
1. Fill out USBC start of league paperwork for the league and each individual bowler and turn it all in.
2. Set up pay envelopes for each team
3. Give each team a monthly spreadsheet so that bowlers know how much they have paid and what is still owed.
4. Collect envelopes each work and have to deal with bowlers who are always behind
5. Fill out USBC paperwork and turn in for all honor scores
6. Answer all questions about league/USBC because the other officers have no answers and I seem to have all the answers :D
7. Set up the prize and sweeper funds
8. Get the prize/sweeper money in cash from the in house banking and separate it all into envelopes for winning the league, point money, and sweeper money.
9. At the end of the year, fill out USBC end of season paperwork and turn it in
All I expect out of this is to bowl for free.  I have never "made" extra money, more often than not, I am always a bit short.
It is my observation that folks that complain the most stop complaining when I explain to them what I do.

Been over this topic many, many times before. It is my personal opinion that the Secretary and/or the Treasurer should get paid no more than 25 cents per person in any league that operates! I know of leagues where they are paying the two 50 cents per person! I will not be a part of those leagues!

This is the technology age, where most of the work is done by computer program, and/or the house you bowl in handles all the money each week! Doesn't make sense for outlays of cash like that to be deferred from the league's prize fund, but into two individuals pockets!!

Not to mention that they get a part of the prize fund, as bowlers, ON TOP of their pay!

And for anyone that wants to know, I have held positions of President, VP, and Secretary in the past!
Some days you're the bug....some days you're the windshield...that's bowling!

I can say with confidence that you are in the extreme minority, the VAST majority of people don't do anything near that.  The house takes care of all of that for most leagues now.  Nobody is complaining about you getting to bowl for free for that, or they shouldn't be.  Of course, the question is begged, why make someone do that and take money out of the prize fund when the house could just do it, but I digress . .

While our secretary does print out all the standing sheets instead of the house I can see that the pretty much overall consensus is that he is overpaid for these duties.

All our center does is in house banking.  The league secretaries do everything else.
