Tell me how to change
« on: September 18, 2014, 07:10:00 PM »
They just upped the level of oil in my Bowling house and I am struggling to master the shot.  I use a hyroad and go up 10 for my normal shot.  With a slightly hurt wrist I'm unable (unwilling?) to try different hand positions.  Should I:

Sand the ball (2000 grit)?
Get a stronger ball?
Try a different line (5 board)?
Throw softer?

Give me your opinion please

have you tried any of the things you've mentioned yet? Part of learning the game is to see what works and does not work - adjustments. Start with the easier cheaper adjustment. Move your feet and/or adjust your speed, ect....  Then if those don't work, go down the list.

Why does your wrist hurt?

In addition to what xrayjay said, what have the bowlers who have had success on the new conditions done to make themselves successful? I would look around and ask questions of those bowlers.

Yup, agree 110%. You have to know what is wrong before you attempt to fix it.

And then there are the times when we're trying to make the ball hook, causing the sore wrist.

My first suggestion would be to add a little surface and go from there.  Move closer to friction if you need, but there should be a line to the pocket somewhere without having to generate more revs than you're comfortable with.

Whenever my wrist hurts after bowling it is a sign that, 1) I need to clear my thumb earlier/cleaner, 2)  I need to relax and just play my game, or 3) usually BOTH.  Good luck to you.

Biggest mistake people make on heavier longer oil is trying to over power the oil, rather than take what the lanes give you.  First thing I would do if it was a house shot is move a board or two to the right.  Easiest adjustment for me is squaring up a bit and playing more direct into the pocket.  Last thing I would do is sand a ball for such a situation.

what ball weight do you use?  I started having wrist issues last season and dropped from 15 to 14 pounds.  it helped me get some of the "action" back in my release that I was losing but more so it doesn't hut near as much.

one thing I have done is move everything in and throw the same.  so if I would normally stand at the 10 and throw down the 10, if it's an oily night then stand at 15 and throw 15. intent is to be able to keep a similar release and ball motion... I'll also try to throw slower, but that can mess up my timing.

I would adjust your line and/or the ball surface before going out to get a new ball. If the ball isn't making it to the pocket from where it used to, you can try moving outside to see if you can get the ball to hook off of the friction sooner, or you can move further inside so as to cut down the distance the ball actually needs to hook in order to get to the pocket.

Additionally, as you mentioned, adjusting surface is always a good option to test out. The Hyroad takes to surface changes very well, so you may find that hitting it with 2000, 1000, or even 500 abralon may cause it to pick up sooner and give you the same reaction you used to experience. The thing to keep in mind there is that balls have a finite amount of reaction potential. Meaning, if you give a ball a rougher surface, it will begin expending that energy earlier, which will lead to less reaction later. Some bowlers can't seem to get that idea into their heads. The key is to match ball surface to your style and the lane condition in order to give you the desired ball reaction and hitting power.

First thing I would do: ask the lane's manager what he has observed others doing to combat that issue. It could be that there is still friction outside and you simply need to put the ball in a different place to get reaction. All places want their bowlers to score well and will generally provide great advice on how to play their lanes, or current condition. I learned a lot one summer by practicing in off hours and bringing in an occasional cheeseburger for the manager to have while he watched me and gave advice on how to play the lanes.

Secondly, if you have no luck with that, think of equipment - starting with what you have.
How old is the ball you are using?
When was the last time it was de-oiled / re-surfaced?
Is the surface correct for what you are trying to accomplish?

Last options in my opinion are new equipment / style change, in that order.
