Title: Best balls for going up the boards
Post by: offthesheet on May 08, 2016, 04:44:10 PM
What are a few of your fav balls for going up the boards?

That depends a lot on the conditions you are talking about

a 35' pattern would be 1 ball
a 45' pattern would be different
and a house shot could also be different

without knowing the above info, typically, symmetric earlier rolling pieces work best for me when i need to go up the boards

A house shot to heavier mediums

The ride is a beast when you can play up 5 with it. Got mine pin down and it hits like a tank.

I agree with symmetric, smooth arc type motion ball.  Also usually dull vs pearl cover.

Symmetric with a smooth arc motion is what I like best for this.  Plus, a dull solid cover that reads a little earlier helps blend out the pattern at the same time.

While I haven't rolled the rock in a while, I am guessing the Gold Pearl Grenade would still get the job done quite capably.

it was a pearl urethane for you youngsters not old enough to remember such things...

that's quite a bit older technology
and I would bet wouldn't do a whole lot on today's medium to heavier patterns OP is looking for
It was great on older wood lanes though

Orange Forza, its very early, very rolly, and doesnt like to be swung. When its right, its right!

I recommend the X by 900 Global.  I threw it on Abbey Road at a demo day and even on a pattern like that the pin-down ball I was using had a hard time hitting flush in the pocket going straight up the 3 board.  It kept hitting light or hitting the 3-pin in the face.  To compare, my original Gamebreaker was able to hit the pocket flush or high flush from the same line.
Note: I am a little speed dominant (but plenty of revs).

I feel that symmetric cores with mild solid coverstocks work the best for me.

Your style will be the contributing factor.

low rg, low flare layouts, but you have to have a release that compliments what you are trying to do. You cant have 60 degrees of axis rotation and expect to go up the boards for very long as the heads break down, even on a house shot.

As tuckinfenpin said, "Your style will be the contributing factor." For myself with slow ball speed, I always have to swing my shot out to reach the break point or use a ball so mild It's dead on arrival at the pocket.

Properly used, I am betting it would still be able to get the job done.  No matter the oil, many patterns actually still allow for the accurate players to score from the weeds.

I know the last time we had an office party, I made the mistake of NOT having it and wished I did when even a Sonic X was too strong.

The best ones I have used are both discontinued.

The Motive SR2 was smooth as silk and very predictable.

The Seismic Solaris Blackout is also super smooth.

Both are probably kinda hard to find, but price wise, the Seismic will be much less painful to acquire.

The Columbia disorder is a great early rolling continuous piece
You should be able to find one around still

IQ solid. depending on volume you can get anything to be decent at going straighter with a shorter pin to pap layout on symmetrical cores or longer pin layouts on asymmetrical cores and going more up the back with your hand
