Title: best bowling shoes for minimal slide
Post by: splitcity on June 24, 2011, 09:57:48 AM
when i learned to bowl i learned to bowl in tennis shoes. actually airwalk bowling shoes to be specific. i bought them as a teenager thinking they were actual bowling shoes and they were actually "bowling style" shoes made by airwalk! here is a link of what i have been bowling in for 15 years. I have averaged between 200-210 for the last 7 years

anyways they are wearing out and i cannot bowl in traditional sliding bowling shoes. so my dilemma is are there any bowling shoes out there i can get that will not slide? i need a replacement asap.

I've tried the #6 backskin sole( the orange one ) and the #4 rippled heel on my 3G Tour Ultra's several times and got absolutely no slide whatsoever.

I second the SST's.  There are several combinations you can use with those to not slide at all.

My arsenal

Heavy Oil: Storm Virtual Gravity Nano: 2000 AB
Medium-Heavy Oil: Storm Anarchy: 1500 polished
Medium Oil: Roto Grip Nomad Dagger: 1500 polished

Medium-Light Oil: Roto Grip Rising Star: 1500 polished

I wouldn't spend much if you don't want to slide at all. The cheapest shoes you can buy probably won't slide any more than tennis shoes.

If they do, just walk through the bar or on the doormats before bowling starts.

Many bowling shoes with changeable slide soles do have less slippery soles, including some that have a rubber sole. Some shoes have adjustable soles that can be used on either shoe.

Also you can use plain tennis or running shoes with NON-marking rubber soles so they don't  leave rubber on the approaches. People who do slide may find your behavior (leaving rubber on the approaches) provides cause for getting upset.

One word of advice, thought:
Unless you're one out of a 1000 or even a lower percentage, in time not sliding will cause serious damage to your knees, like major pain and the need for knee replacement. You may be young now and think you're invulnerable, but time will change that. So unless at some time you want to quit bowling altogether, I suggest you do learn to slide, at least a little. It's not hard but it is a change.

your right charles my knees willl eventualy pay the price. i tell you what else suffers is my accuracy. i pull about 1 shot a game. ill bowl 8 in a row beautiful pocket shots and simply pull one. when you dont slide, you stick. this causes you to come late with your armswing.  people always tell me they are stunned that i average 205-210 in tennis shoes. to top it off i have a bent arm when i bowl. so i look a mess mechanically. ive been bowling this way for 15 years at about 200 games per year. hard to change now but when my knees finally start hurting i will have to

If you want actual bowling shoes......buy the cheapest pair of interchangables  (both that change), and put the push off soles on both right and left feet. This will give you the rubber on both sides.

my knees are officialy starting to kill me from not sliding. also my accracy is getting worse, i will tug about 1 in every 5-6 balls now. i will throw 6-7 good strikes then pull one and get a brooklyn srrike. i think im starting to piss people off too lol. i shot a 747 last week and  i converted 6 out of 7 brooklyn strikes. i had 24 total strikes and 6 were brooklyn. i know its the fact that i stick and dont slide. i want to learn to slide a little to save my knees and improve my accuracy. so other than the SST'S is their a type of bowling shoes that only has a small amount of slide?

NOT SLIDING IS BAD ON YOUR KNEES. you need to slide. im not saying you have to its your choice. but all the people that i know who dont slide have knee trouble. i would recommend some 3g's instead of the dexters. both are good shoes but from past experiences with dexter i would recommend the 3g's. they are tougher, lighter, and more comfortable to. THE TOUR ULTRA SERIES AND SPORTS ULTRA SERIES IS WHAT I WOULD RECOMMEND.

Since you are a good bowler and since you have been doing this for so long,
I think it may be really important to find a good coach to help you do this properly. I believe
it's going to change your hand/arm - feet/leg timing a bit, that may be hard to do on your own.

Your 6 Brooklyn strikes could easily have been six 4-6 or similarly unmakable splits and then you might have had a 550 instead of a 747.
