Another one bites the dust....
« on: July 10, 2010, 12:41:24 AM »
I went out to the garage to grab a few balls and found my new Invasion cracked completely around the entire ball.  This is the second ball in two months that has literally split in two (My Break broke last month).  I really don't have any other place to keep my balls right now as I'm in the process of remodeling the new house.

Anyone have any good ideas on how to keep a garage cool without spending a fortune?  I was thinking maybe some sort of vent in the ceiling, but I'm not sure that would do enough.

I know in the past ( older covers ) could handle hotter temps, but it is my understanding, that temp fluctuations are where you get into trouble.

do you rotate your stock ?
have you considered maybe putting a dehumidifier in there ?
celing fans ?
exhaust fan ?
window unit ( I know the nieghbors would love you )

I've had a number of balls crack on me .. sitting on a rack in my home. You blame it on HIGH TEMPERATURE and I don't disagree with you that maybe a contributing factor.

A couple of BR members have suggested I store the balls in the PLASTIC BAG hat bowling balls usually get delivered in. I started that a few months ago and have not had a cracking since. TRY IT!

Are you keeping them on the garage floor or in a bowling bag ???? The cool floor and the hot summer air will cause crazy expansion and contraction.

I usually chalk it up to bad luck

I have had bowling balls crack all the way around that were on a  concrete floor underneath carpet. I thought that I had learned from that experience, then I lost two balls that were laying on carpet in my bedroom. I have some older balls that are on ball racks in my garage. The balls have been there for years in all kinds of temperatures and never had a ball to crack. Some bowlers believe if you rotate the balls ever so often that this will prevent cracking. My own conclusion is that some balls made today are going to crack no matter what you do. Some brands tend to crack more often than others, but none are exempt from cracking.

I agree,I have had new stuff and older stuff crack no matter where or how I store it. I have had them crack around the ball and not go to the nearest drilled hole. Pressure just seems to build up in the cover and they crack. I think maybe they are cooled too quickly to speed up production.

I had 1 ball crack on me before I even had a chance to drill it. I bought it off ebay, the guy showed me an exact picture of the ball with a #5 in yellow wax wrote on it. Picture showed the ball was perfect and un drilled. I kept the photo in my computer so I can compare the ball I got to the photo to make sure it was the same exact ball but comparing the swirls in the coverstock near the writing.

The ball was a NIB Storm Reloaded. 15# 3.5" pin 4oz top weight.

I opened the box and pull it out of the bag, noticed a huge crack starting from pin going around the ball and stopping just before the pin on the other side. I compared the photo to the ball and it was the same ball. Contacted the seller, showed him photos of the box, ball and everything. He sent me a refund and another ball but the new ball was a Storm Eraser Pearl Particle. I used the ball for about 5 weeks, never really cared too much for it so it sat for about a year. Then gave it my g/f.

My bowling balls either sit in our garage or in my Jeep in the driveway. Our temperatures in the summer are always in the mid 90's with high humidity (SE Florida) None of the balls sit directly on the concrete, either in boxes or bowling bags. The ones in the Jeep are always in my 4 ball roller bag. I rotate them from the garage to the Jeep and back depending upon what I am going to use, not because of any temperature situation.

Never had a ball crack! (at least so far!) I guess I have been lucky!

My stuff is downstairs in boxes with ball cups underneath them I have never had cracking issues when they are left their for awhile. Even in the freezing Wisconsin winters nothing has cracked downstairs.
