3 Step Approach.
« on: January 31, 2010, 12:44:28 AM »
Is there anybody out there that uses a 3 step approach?  I had a friend many years ago that I recall used a 3 step approach.  Doesn't appear very favorable these days, however, I'm thinking of giving it a try and maybe eliminating a little lag or hesitation in my approach.  If you do use a 3 step, did you start bowling that way, or did you convert?  Looks like it maybe a little tricky getting used to.  I remember watching Tony Reyes on the skills challenge with a 1 step...he really looked quite comfortable, and seems he always nails it!

It's just about timing...I use a 3 step when I get in front of the ball return, and as long as the ball is in the swing during the proper steps nothing changes as far as my ball roll compared to a 5 step.

Different step amounts can help change timing if you're trying to change the way the ball gets in the swing or how quickly you get to the line.

I used three steps from in front of the ball return also.  Was a little tough to learn, moving the ball without moving your feet, but I got it with practice.  Very handy trick sometimes.

So, does the ball actually get pushed or dropped away BEFORE any movement of the feet?

It took me quite a while to learn as well Mike.  I drift a little right during my approach so it was necessary having a revrate close to 400rpms.  It has saved my butt many a time and allowed me to use parts of the lane that many local bowlers won't venture to.

JJM can you descibe the issue you are having more specifically and maybe we could give you some advice on how to fix it?  Shortening your approach might in fact be the answer.

It depends on your timing...the ball starts moving in my swing between my first and second step, so to have only steps 3/4/5 I have to have the ball moving before the 3rd step.  If you can find a video online of Tommy Jones in front of the ball return he is the most obvious example of this.

Whether it be 4 or 5 steps. I feel as if somewhere at the beginning, I feel a little crossed-up.  It maybe getting my hips out of the way for my back swing.  I do drift approx 5 boards (consistently), but feel I may stay on track better and drift less with fewer steps. Also hoping to feel more of the pendulum swing I believe may be missing or absent most of the time with my normal approach.
