Bonanza II in County Tourn.
« on: April 24, 2006, 03:46:05 AM »
I was bowling in my county tournament on Sunday 4/23.  It was the singles and doubles event.  Anyway, one of the guys bowling on the other team was throwing the gold Bonanza II.  I knew the ball was said to be illegal by the USBC.

He was bowling really well with it too.  I didn't want to make a scene so I went to the head of the county board (whom I know) and told him that the ball he was using was illegal and it says it right on the USBC site.  He told me they never had anything like that happen before so he didn't know what to do but said he would check into it.

Anyway, nothing was done and the guy used the ball in both shifts and shot 750 and 7 something in singles.

Is there anything I can do to make sure people don't use this ball in competition.  Apparently this guy uses this ball in league all the time and has no clue it is illegal, nor does anyone else.  It just frustrates the hell out of me.

What if he shot 550? Would it have mattered?

Yes it matters, rules are rules.  This is why bowling has no integrity anymore.

I hope this is a retorical question, but to answer it, absolutely it would matter.  Rules are rules, either follow them or don't sanction the event.  They can't be selectively applied.

Use something called tact.  Put it in a way so as to not come across like a whiner.  If you would have said something like, "Not trying to be a pain, but the ball you are using is not legal by USBC.  I would like for you to be able to compete in the event without the fear that someone else will say something and you have to forfeit all your scores."

I did something like this a few weeks ago.  I caught a guy during league using a scotchbrite pad and I just went up to him politely and informed him that he needed to watch himself because someone may not be as polite as I was and if he got caught, he could have his scores removed.  He was very receptive just saying that he was not aware but thanked me for letting him know.

Consider it just trying to educate someone of a rule they may not be aware of.

You sure it was a Bonanza II and not just a Bonanza?

^ Yes, I am not blind............

I saw another guy throw one in this area also during league.  So they are out there.  People just probably don't know they are illegal.

Steve,

Unfortunately, it ALL depends on the attitude of the listener. I did almost the exact same thing you did, afew weeks ago,  using almost the exact same type of phrasing, trying to be the least jusdgmental and the least critical that I could. The guy acted like I asked I asked hs permission to kill his mother or his baby.

Sometimes I just wonder what and how people think ...

I just figured that since I didn't have the print out from the site or a computer to go on-line, that I couldn't prove what I was saying.  So it would basically be my word vs. anyone elses.

In softball tourneys, and evan leagues, we have our bats checked all the time.  The refs put a tag on the bats before league, and then they come into the dugouts before the games to make sure you have all tagged bats.  If you have a bat that is not tagged they ask you to remove it, if you are caught using it, then you are called for an automatic out.  Continious infractions and you are suspended from playing in ASA leagues and tourneys.

Should be the same way in bowling.  Put a list if illeagal balls out at the first meeting, and then check everything on the rack before league.  Wouldn't be that hard if each captain would check the other teams stuff.  At a tourney, have the guy check the equipmetn when you go to sign in.
