Title: Bowlero Elite Series On NBC Sports (I Did Not Spoil)
Post by: MI 2 AZ on April 10, 2019, 01:28:24 AM
This was on tv tonight.  Winner got something like $260k and the runner-up got $60k.

Eight pros competed against each other and eight amatuers competed against each other, then the two winners bowled each other (pro vs amateur).  The tv show only showed the semi-final and final matches.

This is supposed to be a series and the next event will be broadcast in September.

Nice to see a larger prize fund available for bowling.

Would have liked to have seen the earlier matches. Besides that, it was fun. Announcing could be better. Less commercials definitely would be better.

It was amazing to watch a pro versus an amateur square off on TV. Winner took home $270K and 2nd place paid $80K! PBA needs to step up and get some better sponsors!!!!

it was a pro bowling against a house hack on a house pattern. All it really was was a carry contest as is most tournaments bowled on house patterns. I watched it, but it wasn't that thrilling.

I actually don't like the message it sends. If someone with little understanding of lane conditions watches this show, what message did it just send? It just said that an amateur league bowler is on par with top tier pros in the viewers eyes. It makes our sport look even more flat across the board.

I would also liked to have seen highlights from prior matches. I mean, why waste all that bowling star power and limit people like Belmo, Daria, Rash, etc. to promos instead of seeing them perform? It wouldn't take that long to show clips and they seemed to have dead space to fill. It looks like they're still ironing out the wrinkles given how the scores weren't showing correctly for a while but they figured it out. I'm looking forward to the next one!

The winner is a Storm staffer. So he isn’t just some schmuck they found bowling one afternoon.

One of the other amateurs was Troup’s brother.

I do agree though, the pattern needs to be way tougher.

Have to give Storm credit for one thing.  They do seem to have a nose for grabbing up and coming talent early.  This guy just paid for his contract big time.

So if a house shot is so easy, then the  "pros" should be able to shoot 300 every game. Of course, of course, they got robbed and the amateur house hack got a few lucky carries.

How many of you guys making these claims average in excess of 240? I know several local "house hacks" who do, but they aren't PBA members.

Please, many of the best bowlers in the world are not members of the PBA.

Not that I'm a better bowler than the PBA or even top level amateurs, but at my job, I make more than the highest paid PBA bowler, at least if the reported amount is true. And I don't have the expense and issues with having to travel to earn it.

If the pros are so much better than the amateurs, especially on "flat oil", then why aren't the PBA members winning the USBC Open Championships every year? Sure some of them do well, but I don't remember the last time a brand name PBA regular won.

People will complain no matter what for any reason imaginable. Why dont we all just quit bowling and take up 'Candlepin' bowling where the record series is 624 and shooting 500+ is almost nil? Something to shoot for...

Do agree if the PBA paid like the NBA, MLB, NBA etc might well see a different group of people on top.  Intergenerational wealth tends to separate wheat from chaff.  Bowling still tends to have more of an element of both luck and who is hot on a particular day than other sports as well.

I just received an email from Storm. The title match was decided 237 – 226. That doesn't seem any different than the tournaments bowled on "real" conditions. If anything, it's on the low side.

Or it was just a "carry contest" between a couple of shitty spare shooters...

On the low side?  It was a 1 game match for $190,000.  Most people can't pry it off their mitt for $100.

Compared to other PBA tournaments bowled on flat patterns?

to promote professional bowling it was a fail, however as a marketing campaign for Bowlero, it may be successful, time will tell if more bodies go bowling.

At least Barnes won the hall of famer 3 frame battle!

Anyone notice they had red oil on the lanes?

The pro player earned more than twice as much as he has made on tour this year so far.  Might screw over the PBA but I imagine the pro bowlers themselves are all for bowling against whoever for those kind of prizes.

If you look at the scores significant differences in scores between the two brackets as one would expect.  Final was a big outlier for the loser.  Neither final score gets the winner out of first round in one of the brackets.  (edit:  still gratz to winner for being consistent even under pressure)

The dude shot 237 for $270k.  Nerves become a factor no matter how easy the lanes are.  Pretty sure you have to be part of the private jet club to not be nervous for that kind of money.

I just checked my TV schedule and it does not show any repeats/replays for the next two weeks (that's as far as it goes in advance).  Might have to check youtube to see if it is available there.

If I'm bowling for a quarter million on a house shot, the LAST ball I'm throwing is IQ Tour, Pin up with polish. I loved Lefty's release.

What's crazy is lefty will now almost for sure be in the top 5 bowling money winners in 2019 by winning a single tournament.  Good for him/her.  Great spare shooting and ice water in the veins.  Sometimes more about how high your floor is rather than how high your ceiling.

he will for sure be in the top 5 this year. What is even crazier is that coming into the tournament, troup had career earnings of $281K. Could have made all of that in one day. Troup could not have been any classier in defeat. Was a great final match on tv, and that much better to watch in person

You do know this was only an exhibition and not a PBA tourney. So you cant classify him as being in the top 5 money winners in 2019. Now yes, he has won probably the biggest prize ever in a single bowling tourney as i don't recall any bigger, even the PBA majors give crap money for the prestigious tournaments they claim to be.

find a sponsor willing to put up the money i'm sure the PBA will gladly increase those prize funds

i think what bowlero did has both good and bad in it.  on one hand it brings attention to bowling and some much needed excitement which is good, on the other hand putting it on a house shot over simplifies the game and the nuances of how/what/why that separates a pba bowler from a rec league bowler are lost on the casual audience.  but overall it is still a good thing because this sport needs as much attention as it can get

personally i did not like how the whole tournament seemed arbitrary.  the amateurs were selected based on submitted videos and the they brought in a bunch of pros.  to me it would be have been better had they held local/regional tournaments at bowlero centers with participation in a bowlero league being a prereq and then build up toward this event.  at least then it would feel like there was some merit toward the whole thing,  the way they did it, it felt more like charlie and the chocolate factory, and these were the lucky ones who found golden tickets and got an invite.

Or just do what I do for the Bowlero league priced $2 open games rest of the week pre-bowl every week in a cheap unsanctioned league on your lunch hour.

In April issue of BJI, they mention that the other shows will be Sept 11 at 9pm EST on NBCSN and Dec 28 at 3pm EST on NBC.

Total prize fund for all three events estimated to exceed $1 million.
