requesting pins
« on: July 27, 2017, 09:06:37 AM »
is there a website that u can buy bowling balls and GUARANTEE a pin distance looking at doing a boomer layout and want to be able to select a ball at like 5 inch pin, but most of those r xouts if u buy from the pro shop, i got hell(from the distributor) for requesting a 4 inch pin and sending it back when they sent me a 2-3 and telling me thats the best they could do.(and no im not gonna get a new distributor, thats not what this post is about) i could just wait around on ebay and HOPE i find a ball with a 5 inch pin, but im not a fan of doing that.

pin is below thumb, so it's preferred that you get a longer(5 inch pin) to put the cg in the center of ur span

Most of the online guys will call or email to ok specs before a ball that is out of the specs requested is shipped.  But, most drop ship orders from a distributor and most distributors won't open boxes to measure pins, you get whatever is listed on the box.  That's the reality of it.

I was able to select a range for my pin length and top weight when I pre-ordered my RG Hustle INK at Buddies Pro Shop website.  I am not sure if that is an option on released equipment, at minimum most sites allow you to make requests in the notes section of a purchase.  I highly doubt that you will get a guarantee from any online store, just a we will try our best to accommodate your request.

I will echo what Luke asked, "What is a boomer layout?"  Pic if possible.

That sounds similar to a full roller layout.

close, but full roller layout, pin is off to the side, boomer, it's directly below the thumb

I will echo what Luke asked, "What is a boomer layout?"  Pic if possible.

Schlemer explains, “If you get the pin out far enough, in effect you are inverting the core.” That, of course, is in relation to the ball track, and helps it get into an earlier roll. And, of course, the relatively big and deep thumb hole is taking out some of the core mass near the pin (what Schlemer called “the meat of the core”). Thus, he says, “You’re balancing out the RG and differential, making it more symmetrical. It makes it more smooth and controlled.”
With the pin so far below the thumb, there’s a danger that the ball will have far too much thumb weight, so Schlemer advises starting with a 4-5” pin and low top. The CG should be near the grip center, but can go left or right (with appropriate balance hole).
Can it work for the league bowler? If the bowler is having trouble with the ball “going sideways” off the spot, yes. Also, Schlemer says it can benefit the straight player who has to start in the dry.
While the Boomer layout is designed to decrease differential, RICO does essentially the opposite. RICO, named after inventor Ric Hamlin, puts the pin smack in the center of the grip, with the CG exactly 45° away (the 4:30 position for RHs), and a balance hole on a line through the CG exactly 6¾” from the pin. Hamlin says it’s important to drill the balance hole into the core, to “reshape” it, making it more dynamic.
Hamlin developed the layout six years ago. Says he, “it creates the strongest amount of asymmetry (in a symmetrical ball), the strongest amount of imbalance.” Yet it tends to decrease flip while maintaining continuation.
The layout has been successful on lanes with dry backends. “A normal layout tends to accentuate the oil, and when the ball sees friction, it wants to go sideways and becomes uncontrollable,” Hamlin says, but RICO smoothes out the move off the oil.
It may not be the best ball for a house pattern, but Hamlin says it should be in the arsenal of players who hit PBA or Sport conditions.
His experience has been that “if guys didn’t have a good reaction with their regular equipment, it was pretty much guaranteed that this would give them a different reaction.” pretty much tames out a ball reaction, it's part of those special weird layouts, my buddy has a boomer'd c300 impulse that i threw on real dry, and i was in love...but he wont sell me it! lol so i gotta find a way to get my own

If you are going internet/national pro shop route instead of working with a local PSO, call Buddies - they have customer service that will try to accommodate you.  If any one can help you find a 5 inch pin, it would be them.

yea it's tough to go through local bc the distributor only stocks so many of a certain ball, and from my experience, 5 inch pins tend to be x outs. it's almost like a speciality thing
