Playing Head-to-Head Strategy
« on: January 25, 2007, 04:43:41 AM »
hello everybody,

I just entered a tournament where you bowl match play, just like the round of 32 of the PBA. The question here is what should I do when playing against my opponent(except bowl and bowl a lot of strikes) Is there where i can attack them mentally... I know i should beat them by bowling better, but it's just like a game plan

really, nothing bad in my mind, just wanted to see opinions

thanks

I am sure someone will disagree with what I am going to say, but here goes.

If you want to make an impression on your opponent then, try and make the best shots you can, pick up your spares. Give your opponent skin or high five when they are coming off the approach. Act like your have class and be a gentleman. He and others will remember this and you will feel better even if you lose.

It only take one or two times acting like an jerk and you will have a reputation of being one all the time.

I agree with shipper, be classy and make proper adjustments during the match.

I have been in this situation wtice, once in a stepladder final.
There's nothing you can do - or better: should do. I found that I "work" best when I can keep up my normal routine which I keep in training, league or tournament. It makes the situation "normal" fo me, and I do not give anything on the counting board.

Personally, I do not "attack" or offend my opponents, but that's mostly due to my introvert nature. Results speak on their own, even though an emotional outburst every now and then or nagging comment ("That did look very promising, did it?", "Ooops, once again...") can do minor wonders

But I'd never take it to an unsportmanlike or personal level. That's open bowling (not even funny), but in tournament there should be respect for each other, anyway.

The one piece of advice I can give is to not change anything you normally do.  Any change of routine may cause havoc on you and not your opponent.  If you are an excited bowler, keep it up.  If you are normally calm on the lanes, stay that way.  Let your bowling talk for you.  I totally agree with shipper.  Act classy and act like you have been there before.  This has worked for me many times during match play.

Who needs a 300 or 800, when I have a 294 and a 295!?!?!

My last post was somewhat of a joke and I agree as well with everyone.

One other thing is, if you know your line and your bowling against someone you KNOW you can beat, then throw some bad practice balls and make them feel good about themselves because they will think your off. When you start bowling they will know differently and that will just let the air out of their bag and they will do pretty mediocre.

I have done that on several different occasions and to be honest I dont think I have had an opponent shoot higher than 175.

My suggestion is sort of like the others, with a twist.  If u r the type to get pumped when u r doing well, get REALLY pumped.  Stay agressive, but not over the top PDW in your face with crotch chops agressive.

Ive always found that if u stay really pumped, & act like u KNOW u r going to strike to win, the opponent typically wont be able to do enough to make u strike to win.  Just personal exp.

Personally, i would rather bowl head to head than anything else.  Team tournaments, as well as the full sweeper style where u just bowl 3-5 games & thats that dont work for me.  I wanna bowl 5 games, cut the field in half, bowl 3-5 more, cut to top however many they want, then do round robin match play, then stepladder.

Typically i can beat the 1 person i have to beat, its when im worrying about the other 2304982340298 bowlers that i tend to not do as well.

...or garlic. Once had a Russian imigrant family next lane to me in training, and they smelled like a box of salami. THAT was chemical warfare, even unintended...

I'll be the evil bowler this time.
Heres a good mental attack to throw the other guy off.
Ask them if they inhale or exhale when they release the ball? It will throw them off one or two shots. Even if they know what your doing it can get them. Do it in the middle of the game.

Its like saying "dont think about this" their going to think about it anyway.

It happened to me. That very question.

Now if they do it to you. Have a answer that gives it back to them.
Like "I exhale hard on the push away, so I can take a deep breath during the swing."
