Bowling on Cheetah on Tuesday...
« on: November 25, 2010, 05:57:20 PM »
I'm a stroker, around 275 RPM although I can get it over 300 RPM. Ball speed around 15 MPH. Did pretty well on Chameleon and struggled on Shark. Thoughts on Cheetah? Was thinking of using my 5" pin to PAP Backlash Blue/Silver. Read/heard the best line was around the 1st arrow or even a little outside of that. Experiences/thoughts?

The best line is right by the gutter. My best success was with a solid, with a length drill. I used a full swing with the pin kicked up about an inch maybe a little more above my ring and slightly to the right. Mass bias right next to thumb and the cg is slightly below the ring finger. I sanded the ball by hand with a 1000 pad and then went over it for 15 seconds on all 6 sides with a 4000. Amazing hold. I tried to hit the 2/3 board standing at the 20 and dropping it around the 5-7. Im a bigger guy so where I have to stand to play certain areas is different than others lol. A pulled inside shot playing my intended target will caught a cross over and obviously tossed outside is the gutter. Alot of people aren't comfortable around the gutter. I am. I love cheetah and the kegal sport boardwalk pattern.

when u bowl on short oil or any challenging short sport shot, my best advice is, dont forget the urethane!
--------------------
When a house bowler misses the mark, misses the break point and strike, for many ppl its called a wallshot. When a pro does that its call adjustment

When a house bowler gets his finger stuck in the ball and fall on the lanes, for many ppl its called lame bowler. When a pro does that its called the Machuga flop! ha i like this one.

You didn't mention what kind of axis rotation and tilt you have, but if you can keep your hand more behind the ball on this pattern, it'll help. You want the ball to roll off that friction instead of jump. If you can get yourself lined up with your breakpoint around the 2-3 board, you will have a little hold room left and a little extra friction right, making it like a miniature version of a house shot. (Emphasis on "miniature." You still only have about 3-4 boards room at the breakpoint at most, and it will break down and get tougher!) Also, close up your angles. You will NOT be able to swing the ball and still score unless you have a ton of hand. People will try to move left and throw it out to the ditch, but they also will have poor carry and will really struggle just to hit the headpin on even the smallest mistakes. The key is to get right on top of that friction next to the gutter. Roll your ball right up the boards. And remember, at least on fresh oil, you need to be even further right than the 1st arrow.

I'm similarly a lower-rev guy with moderate speed.  My best results on Cheetah and other very similar 35' sport shots have come with different equipment depending on the lane surface and who I'm bowling.  On AMF HPL synthetics, I've done extremely well with a 4.25x3 pin down Mars sanded to 2000 abralon on fresh oil, and after the shot carried down some, I switched to a 5x5 pin up Prodigy with polish and tightened my angles up a little. Carry became an issue after making that change, but that's the nature of the pattern. On wood lanes, I couldn't get the Mars to come off the breakpoint hard enough, so I threw a 5x5 pin up Gravity Shift with surface (I believe around 2000 but lots of lane shine from throwing it for ages without touching the cover) and moved a board or two left to project it out to the breakpoint more. That worked very well until the lanes broke down and it stopped carrying, so I switched again to the Prodigy.

Last two outing at regionals have been on Cheetah. The first was on some Korean/Chinese whichever synthetic. Even house shot there is not known for anything outside. I actually was able to use a long pin Bank with box surface with some success, but real inconsistent from pair to pair. Then they broke down and got tougher, last game had a nice one used a pin down Break Point Pearl that was really strong late but easy to get out to the break arond the 2 board.

Second experience was on HPL. Much more consistent and used a lightly polished Break Out with pin down at 4 1/2" from my PAP, mb at VAL. Real smooth ball and was setting 16 at around plus 115 after 5 games. Playing between 4 and 6 at arrows out to 2 or 3 at the break point depending on lanes. Only had one pair I had to swith balls and only managed a 190+, used two different balls with one lane much tighter than the other. Moved right with a label drilled Favorite pin at the same location as the Break Out to close the game. Then the transistion hit real quick and I never found anything consistent that would work and dropped out of the money. Still not sure the answer and my Break Point Pearl had cracked in the time between the two events so no way of knowing if that would have been the solution.

Point being, the lane surface can really play tricks with this pattern as it can most. There is no way a Bank should work on Cheetah but with the soft backends from the one center it did. The Break Out was great due to the smooth roll and hook this ball provides and in league would have been good for all 3 games. I agree and did use the type roll mentioned about in both events. Really tried to stay behind the ball and get as much roll as I could to smooth the reaction and get some decent carry.

The lane surface is a major factor.  I have had success with lower pin balls and an up the back release.  Also do not be afraid of using a ball with surface on it.  The extra surface will help the ball use energy earlier.  That avoids the ball having too high an entry angle and is easier to control.
