Brackets - am I missing something?
« on: November 21, 2010, 12:33:19 PM »
I'm back to bowling after a 20 year absence - this is my first full season - did a summer league this year to get ready. The league I'm in runs brackets (we didn't have these where I bowled before) - $5 per entry. I'm currently averaging 223, and our handicap is based on 220, so I get 0. I get in 3 or 4 brackets each week, and after 12 weeks, I've been shut out 5 times, lost a little 3 times, broke even once and came out ahead 3 times -overall, I'm ahead $75 so far.
Someone pulled me aside tonight and told that I'm crazy for even getting in because I'm not getting any handicap. He is willing to bet me that I won't come out ahead for the full season. I look at it and figure, I am getting no handicap, and the others are getting 90% of 220, but if we both hit our average, I win - they either have to bowl above theirs, or me below mine for them to win.

Yeah tleep, it sounds to me like this guy is just threatened by or upset that you're winning like you are and he'll say anything to get you to stop buying in. Just keep doing what you're doing

It is easier for the 190 guy to shoot 220 than a 230 guy to shoot 260

If you average 230, your looking at 2-3 additional strike to get 260. Or one less open, depending on how your bowling.

Once again with handicap at 80% of 220 and your at 230

A 190 average bowler gets 24 pins. Thats a 214 game if he shoots his average. He has to go 16 over just to tie you if you shoot your average.

Some nights that is easier then others for some one at that average.

It being a numbers game is the reason I said to get in as many as you can. Most of the brackets around here you can get in as many as you wish. We have a few that will tell whoever is running the backets to put them in all of them and let them know how much. It cuts down on the luck factor.

Bowling is like life. Sometimes you are the ball. Other times you are the pins.

Update - the guy called me out again tonight - this time I knocked him out in the first round, and he said it's because he bowled below his average. I was below mine too - but still beat him. Afterwards, he caught me walking out and told me that if we both bowl our average I'm screwed - I asked him how figures - he's a 160, getting 54 pins, I'm a 220, getting 0. That comes out to 220 - 216 in my math. He then told me that he got a new ball and he will be bowling abovve his average the rest of the year anyway - okay, that's fine, so your average will go up, and your handicap down, no problem - call me when you start doing that - until then, standing bet, anytime you're ready, $20, total series - thanks and have a good night. He had nothing more to say - meantime, I won 1 and placed second in one of the four - pocketed $35 for my $20 investment, and was still below my average for the night. As soon as I figure out show to carry the 7 pin, I'll be all set - just glad November is over - haven't hit my average yest this month.

Screw that guy, just keep taking his money laughing all the way.
