Bowling Balls Freezing - Question
« on: January 20, 2009, 01:18:48 PM »
So last week I tried to play it safe and keep my balls in my place since it was like -15F here.

I got league right after work so I usually go straight to the bowling alley.  My place is like 30 minutes away.  Last week while it snowed, everyone for some stupid reason drove all slow on the highway.  It took me an hour both ways and I was late to bowling.  I still averaged 210+ last week though but I was pissed at missing practice.

Tomorrow it will be a high of 20F.  I have decided to just take 2 balls this week and use 2 ball roller.  The balls will be in my car for about 8 hours.

I got them wrapped in towels.  Will the balls freeze?

I am carrying Storm Recharge and Storm Gravity Shift.

Thanks!

They will get really cold. Can you bring them inside of work and keep them somewhere? If not, try to get to bowling a little early and set them out to warm up slowly before use. Don't put them near any direct heat or they might crack.

I will bring them in to work then for the LULZ.  If someone asks, I will look like an idiot though.  I guess it could be worse and I could bring the 4 ball roller LOL!  Man I gotta park close.  Maybe I will cover the roller with a coat so I look like I am carrying office supplies.

I always bring mine in to work. Who cares what anyone says.
Except when they see me cleaning them and I get the usual ball washer jokes, but WTH.

Wrapping them in towels won't help. They will still get just as cold. If you can't take them into work with you, maybe a bunch of hand warmers thrown in the bag may help. Just a suggestion.

I live in Minnesota, most of my equipment is kept in my unheated garage. I have never lost a ball to a crack and never had any issues. All I have to do is when I get to center I take out what I am starting with and rub it down with my towel to get it started to warm up. By the time practice is done it is at room temp.

You might try to put them in an insulated beverages cooler box (the simple ones made from foamed material), this will prevent a drastic temperature change, but not prevent freezing in the long run. Might work for an hour or so. But just a towel is not enough, better make sure you take the balls with you - I do the same when I try to get to training after work at the moment, the car is simply too cold.

They will be very cold. And they might crack if you use them when theyr still cold, And you dont want to stick your thumb down the thumb hole when it feels like your holding 15# of ice

Well I didn't bring them in LOL.  I got to work late and didn't want to have to explain to my boss why not only am almost 1 hr late but that I am carrying bowling balls.  He might say, "you like bowling, well do that for a career then!" LOL

I might try to get them at lunch.  Its just that coming in late with no other workers around you to shield the embarrassment of carrying bowling balls is scary.  At lunch all the smokers will be outside to shield my shame.

I accidentally left mine out in the garage overnight in that weather last week, -15 here too.  My Cell turned all sorts of pretty colors, but no cracks.  I regularly leave mine in the car at work on bowling nights, no cracks.  My teammate never leaves his in the car, and his Shift cracked all the way around last week.  Go figure.

I don't necessarily think it's cold that cracks bowling balls, but rapid change in temperature.  I also think that the quality of the original pour of the ball has a lot to do with it too.  The one thing I wouldn't do is throw a frozen ball, I always let mine warm up before throwing them.

Yeah agreed.  I will be going out for lunch so I will check my balls then.  I also have the moonroof open so the sun can hit it and heat up the inside of the car like a greenhouse.  I've been looking at the weather and it is about 20F now.  With the sun, it should keep the inside above freezing temps.  Also I plan to get there early and let my balls warm up before I use them.
