Bowling Balls Freezing - Question
« on: January 20, 2009, 01:18:48 PM »
So last week I tried to play it safe and keep my balls in my place since it was like -15F here.

I got league right after work so I usually go straight to the bowling alley.  My place is like 30 minutes away.  Last week while it snowed, everyone for some stupid reason drove all slow on the highway.  It took me an hour both ways and I was late to bowling.  I still averaged 210+ last week though but I was pissed at missing practice.

Tomorrow it will be a high of 20F.  I have decided to just take 2 balls this week and use 2 ball roller.  The balls will be in my car for about 8 hours.

I got them wrapped in towels.  Will the balls freeze?

I am carrying Storm Recharge and Storm Gravity Shift.

Thanks!

It's always good to let your balls warm up before you use them!

Since I bowl a 9pm league, and if i have to work late, I just bring my 3ball roller into work and put them next to our pizza oven lol.    But normally if i leave my stuff out in the car over nite, I'll bring it in the nite before and they thaw out lol.

I'd rather take the verbal jabs at work about bowling, than to throw a cold ball and see it crack.

I thought you were a "nuckler engineer". I would think someone with your brain capacity could figure out that the bowling balls would get cold. Maybe you can knit some ball cozies to wrap around them and keep them warm.

Try to let them warm up on there own.
Do not use any other heating methods.
This will probably cause them to crack.

Well with my brain capacity, the temperature is not an issue as far as the balls getting cold or hot.  The issue is the expansion and contracting of the various materials in a ball at a high rate of change (delta T) that could cause problems because the flux of the materials of the ball - in particular the metallic core and the ceramic/resin coverstock can be changing sizes at different rates over time and cause a separate from both materials which could eventually cause the ball to crack over time by fatigue stress.

Here I'll make it simple for you.

Cold ball + bowling = higher chance of cracking.

Therefore don't bowl with a cold ball.

Leaving them in extreme cold is bad. Saturday night a guy on my Thursday night left is bag in his car over night. Lost 2 storm balls to cracking. It was -10F. I bought a 2 ball tote bag I use to bring my good gear into work, leave the spare ball and roller bag in car. I throw a big blanket over the bag when it is not super cold 35-40 and it helps keep them warmer.

I keep my balls in an unheated garage and have no trouble with cracking. Live in NEPA last week 10 degrees, got to league early (half hour before practice) no problem. When I had a pickup truck I used my 4 ball inline roller for weight in bed of truck. Had many different brands of balls, no cracks.

Thanks for hope!

I am going to check my balls in 25 minutes.  I don't think there should be a problem.  Afterall, they are Storm balls.

Bring them into work and keep them warm that way, If you have to leave them in the car get to the center early and get them out of the bag and let them warm with out outside interference.

Pray they don't crack, but look at it this way they are just Storm balls

My balls didn't crack.  In fact with it only 15F outside and having been in my car from 9:30am to 5:30pm, the balls were actually just cool not cold.  This is because my awesome brain created the greenhouse effect in the car.  With the sun beaming in the temperature in the car never dropped below freezing and by the time I got to the alley, the balls were warm.

I bowled 190-237-220 and got 2nd place in tonight's tournament.  The other guy bowled 246.  Still won some cash!

You must of dreamed up this scenario up just so you could look good...btw, good bowling there necro.

Awesome brain, no. Anyone with half your wits could think that up, that is, if they had a sunroof/moonroof in their car.

In fact, you probably only needed to have a dark colored car to create the same 'greenhouse' effect.

Haha, thanks.  I should of had 245 last game.  I had a Yahtzee going into the 10th and got 8/7.

Yeah my car is black hehe.  Without my Vertigo though, I felt uncomfortable most of the night though.

After work, get a couple of 5 gallon buckets full of cooling water discharge from your plant. Sit them in the backseat of your car. Throw your two balls in the buckets for the drive to your center. Your balls will be warm and clean.

When I was living in South Dakota and had to bring my equipment in town with me I would wrap a good heavy sleeping bag around my bowling bags. I would make sure that they were covered on all sides at least twice. I never had any equipment change colors or crack on me when I did this.
