Bowling & Drinking
« on: April 15, 2014, 04:23:01 PM »
Does anybody else have this problem...

Seems like you need a drink when you are bowling league...
Makes the game less stressfull but after a while you know why you are missing pins and its because of the drinking... Each week I say - No drinking during league to myself but we never make it...  One bad shot sending you over the edge and you have conversation with the bartender. lol

I have a drink or two to "knock the edge off"........but the thing is, I really don't have any alcohol problem at all.  I don't really ever drink unless I'm out bowling or playing poker, and in that case it is 1-2, 3 at absolute most.  It does relax me.

I just never have been the biggest drinker ever.  It is all recreational for me.

I would say that I enjoy the drink just b/c, however the relaxation is more of an added benefit as opposed to that being "the reason".  I CHOOSE to have a drink as opposed to "need".

I drink when I bowl.  In fact, sometimes I even get drunk!  Oh NO!

That about sums it up for me now too.  Some nights I don't even drink if I don't feel like it, other times I drink just because I want something to drink haha.  I used to plan the stuff out, like I'd get a double Wild Turkey and Coke a half hour before league so I'd be all sauced up and ready to go.

I often go w/a simple Mello Yellow or Sunkist.

To each their own I suppose.

It depends on what league I'm bowling.

My high dollar mens league I don't drink, just water. I want my head clear.

My other two leagues I will drink as they are more of fun leagues, but that only means I will drink 2 or 3 beers and no more. I still have to drive home and I do not want a DUI.

I used to drink when I bowled.  A lot.  My average went up 15 pins when I stopped.  Not all of that is attributed to not drinking, but most of the 3rd game improvement is.

I generally don't drink at all unless I'm on vacation anymore and I don't have to drive (Vegas, Reno, cruise, etc).  Maybe if I move somewhere with taxi options, but it's not worth the risk for me.
Hit the pocket and hope for the best

I second what Joe Cool and seven mentioned.

That is why I limit to 2 per NIGHT....it's not even worth a DUI.

The wife and I bowl in league together so some nights I have a few and she drives, other nights the oposite. I can say 100% without question I dont have a problem with alcohol or any other substance but some nights I NEED a drink to help me relax if im bowling like crap, and it usually helps me bowl better or at least not care and just have a good time. If I didnt have that drink would I become cranky, fall apart and start shaking from withdrawls? uh no! But thats because im not an alcoholic and dont drink because of addiction, I could take it or leave it but its a choice not a necessity.

I have mental strength and willpower (control over myself) with the ability to delay gratification, so I tend to not let these things be issues.

That's just me though.

I don't think northface is that far off (in fact I agree w/him very often), I think it (the discussion) has to do with the blurred line between "need" and "choose".

We have to define terms.

Every physiology is different.

I find this to be like having a headache and needing aspirin or something.  No you won't die if you don't have it, but you use certain things to achieve certain results.  Sometimes you can tap a nail in with the butt of a screwdriver, and sometimes you need a big ass hammer . .

So the feeling you "need" a drink vs. just wanting a drink doesn't have negative life consequences?

Your definition of an alcohol problem sounds a little to clinical.

First, define "need". When most people say that they're really saying "Strongly prefers" or "Is a crab ass unless he gets".

No, needing a drink doesn't make you an alcoholic....unless your drinking causes negative outcomes and you do it anyway.

Needing an aspirin doesn't make you an aspirin addict, it means you're strongly desiring one for a desired outcome...that in and of itself does not equate addiction. It's the habitual action of taking it that results in problems, and your continuing to do this action that would land you in my office.

Not just needing something. We all have "needs" for getting through the day, that run the gamut of dependency, so it's not worthwhile to say the need is the addiction because need varies, and so does outcome.

You have to rely on some sort of clinical line.

I can't relate drinking alcohol to taking an aspirin.  I've never gotten the warm, fuzzy feeling from 4 or 5 aspirin.

I dont normally drink while on leagues.(Although i dont think my teammates have ever actually bowled while sober)

Although now that i think about it, my highest scores of this year on Wednesday (two 277s and 1 279) came after mixed drinks and jello shots.

Maybe i should drink more  ;D
