String Pinsetters - What A Tangled Web
« on: April 10, 2019, 01:35:22 AM »
I guess this is a new thing for entertainment bowling?   I don't know if the strings inhibit pin action like messengers so it may not be something league or tournament bowlers would like.  I just had read that the first 300 game was bowled on a string pinsetter and the bowler was awarded $1,000 so I was curious what this machine was like.

Doing some googling I found these videos.

Not the same machine, this one is German, but the pins really
dance in this video:

Another tangled mess, duck pins?

The problem with string pinsetters is that pins can be knocked over without being touched. We've all seen the airborne pin that flies over another pin. With string pinsetters, that flying pin will most likely yank on the string and take out the standing pin.

Balls: Motiv Trident Abyss, Motiv Golden Jackal, Motiv Hydra and Motiv Hyper Sniper. All made in the USA.

There is one of these houses at Jack London Square in Oakland and it looks like the lanes have no oil at all. As in they might not even have a lane machine.

There's an alley here in Sacramento where the last 12 lanes of the house have these. As they never will be sanctioned for league or tournaments, the only things they are used for are parties and open/glow bowling. Besides, if any serious bowler gets those as a pair and wants them, they really aren't bowling on them to score or anything; they are there to see how their ball is reacting to the oil and continuation through the pin deck.

Now, keep in mind that QubicaAMF offers those types of pinsetters:

That is what this particular house in Sacramento uses, although the first 32 lanes there were updated to use the XLI Edge pinsetters over the old mid-1970s garbage they were using.
