Practicing on getting my ball speed up by raising the ball in my stance and lengthening my arm swing. Problem is this is totally screwing my hope at a free arm swing and a smooth release. Timing isn't bad though, just my shoulder tenses up or I am forced to squeeze the ball in order to keep the shoulder relaxed. Either way I lose. Anyone know how to keep relaxed when holding the ball higher in your stance?

This may be bad advise, or it may just work, but instead of a "pushaway" use a "dropaway". Just let the ball fall instead of pushing it out first. This may make it so your shoulder can't tense up. Or not. But I'd give it a shot.

I am NOT a coach, or even a good bowler though, so, take my advise for what it's worth. Just something to think about.
Good Luck!

Hex, Check your grip and the force with which you are pushing the ball away. If your pitches aren`t correct and you are forcefully pushing the ball away you are actually creating alot of tension in your shoulder and your swing. What are your spans and what are your pitches? Approximately what is your ball speed and rev Rate and what do you average? how heavy is the bowling ball? what are you bowling on for lanes and what is the condition dry ,wet? oh yea and what is your tilt. There are changes with these factors involved that could add ball speed and help you match up better to the enviorment you bowl in.

I recently changed my game to implement a higher ball position and a free armswing...I start with the ball at shoulder height with the ball actually leaning against the front of my shoulder and my elbow directly below the ball and against my side, this should feel like no weight is being held by right arm but more like the ball is setting atop your arm and leaned against the shoulder (no muscles tensed)...I'm a righty, my left hand is on the left side of the ball but does not hold any weight in the start position and only helps in the pushaway move to stabilize left and right until the free drop from in front...if you are a five step bowler the ball should remain tucked to your shoulder on your first step and move directly out in front in time with your second step and reaches the full extension in front of you as your heel and toe finish touching..the ball should be in front of you appr chest high, from there your left hand releases and you need to let the ball drop in a pendulum free armswing...do not help the ball back and do not pull the ball through..just let gravity take it freely back and let it fall from your backswing down to your release point..also be sure to hold the ball to your right side and not in the center of your chest in the start position, the ball must be to the right side touching your point of your shoulder so that it can swing straight back and not have to wrap around your body.  If you are a four step then the pushaway must start with initial movement and be done at the end of step one.  It is really important to time this pushaway and create a muscle free backswing and stroke...this can all be done with or without a ball and definitely in your home without actually releasing a ball....Practice is very important early in this transition but then gets better with time as you get used to this style.  The rewards are better speed without effort (muscle) and better ball length before breakpoint but most importantly better backend and more consistent reaction....Hope this helps..any further questions hollar back, Alzgarvin

Do you guys think to increase speed and keep a loose swing that perhaps starting my swing faster and shorter while speeding up my approach could work? I know it will take time working with the timing issues but would it be viable? Or should I stick to longer swing and slower feet???
