Question about axis tilt and axis rotation
« on: September 22, 2007, 12:09:52 PM »
I was reading about axis tilt and axis rotation, and I think I might have figured out why I get pretty good forward roll and yet I still have a low track. I know I have good forward roll because my coach told me. I think my problem is, I have low axis rotation but a lot of axis tilt. Am I way off here, or could that cause a low track? And could I have that low track and still not be spinning it? Thanks.

No you are not way off track. that could cause low track. a lot of tilt means you could be spinning it. A low track does not mean lots of tilt or spinning the ball.
Fagan I believe has a low track but tracks around the ball. The only way to truly tell if you are spinning it is by checking the circumference of the track itself. I forget the inches of diameter that corresponds to tilt. I believe the morich site has the info.

How could I spin it if my fingers aren't coming around it? My thumb might be going too far left, but I'm releasing the ball with my fingers at the 5-6 o'clock position.

Here's the track diameter/axis tilt conversion chart...

It Might look like you have a lot of tilt because of where you see the fingers rolling.  Check your track and see how bid the diameter is. Measure the distance between the first track ring on each side of the ball. or measure from where the flares cross(bowtie) on each side of the ball to get a better idea of your tilt

for every 1" < 13.5" = 6 2/3° of tilt

here is a chart to help aswell

Hope this helps a bit

I'm not sure what all of this means. All I know is that my ball rolls well and my coach tells me I am NOT spinning it, my track is just low.

My thoughts & suggestions:
You may not be spinning it but you sure as heck are turning the ball (or attempting to turn it) well before your thumb has exited. I'd also guess your turning your wrist and forearm during the downward part of the backswing. Kind of surprised that your coach hasn't mentioned this. That's far too early.

Try the old trick of leading with your ring finger. ALos try not turning the ball, until AFTER your thumb has left the ball. That point should be just barely before the ball hits the bottom of the swing, near your foot, at the slide.

Does that make any sense?
