Bowling partner needs a ball suggestion
« on: May 10, 2003, 01:26:16 AM »
Okay, my teammate wants a ball that will help her get more revs.. I know, she is working on her release, but she is going to need some more help.

She is currently using a Brunswick Purple Fuze for everything.  It's drilling appears to be 12:00 leverage. She is a 172 average.  Her speed is a low-med, rev are low to really low.  She generally stands near the 17 and plays the 2nd arrow (10).  Her ball follows a nice line down and in but you can count the revs by just eyeballing it.

While I think her release is the biggest factor here, I also think she needs another choice in balls. We are generally playing on med-heavy oil with carrydown.  She is good at adjusting.  However, when she is playing dryer lanes, then it is splits city. Anything that you can suggest that is ging to give her more turns?  Or that would compliment her fuze?  Basically, she wants more balls reaction.

Thanks

well, if she wants to stay in the brunswick line what about an eliminator? there are several low rev female bowlers in one of my houses that do rather well with the eliminator and other light load particles, plus from what iv sen and heard the eliminator is a pretty versatile ball and it responds to cover alterations well, just my opinion anyway but id say go with a particle pearl or a light load like the eliminator...

She is open to any line... but now I've got one ball to check into for her.  Thanks.

Yep, Peri, she absolutely needs to work on her lift.  Funny thing... the night of our banquet we both had a few too many and decided to bowl.  Since nothing was on the line (and her fears of failure were way down due to the alcohol) she really worked on the release change.  After a few nice balls, she was so excited.  She kept saying -- that looks like your ball!  It will be hard for her to make the change since she has such a consistent game with her current release.  I think she needs a new ball, in some ways, to help her "believe" she can get more revs.  New ball, new reaction, new release... get the drift.

I agree with Brian, the ball can only help maybe a rev or 2, but not enough to notice a major change. The key is matching up her ball speed to her rev rate. Have her slow the ball down and put a little more tilt by "cocking her hand to the inside". See Ron C's tips on the release http://www.bowl4fun.com.

I also like Can You Rev's Idea about the wrist support. I would also recommend the Pro-Release and the Robby rev. These are adjustable to different releases.

As for balls that might make a difference I have a Blade and it does start up very early. I have not seen anyone throw the WOW, but I would take Brian's word as he is a good bowler. Other balls I would recommend are the Apex Addiction which has one of the lowest RG cores which helps it rev up early. I don't own one, but I have seen people throw the Addiction with some success.

I would also recommend the Brunswick Inferno. It has a low Rg core revs up hard on the back end it also flares a lot there is almost 1/2" between flare rings. The Blade by comparison has about 1/8" between flare rings. The Blade relies more on the coverstock to provide it's aggressiveness and the Inferno is more of a balanced attack.

Adding to the list.  I have a Pro-release that may fit her, so I'll see if she would be interested in trying it out.  I am hoping to get her and another new teammate for next year out on the lanes more this summer.  I know I'm not a better bowler, but I am good at seeing what others are doing or not doing.  Also, they really need to do more practice bowling where they can try new things and get comfortable with them.  We have divergent problems --she is afraid to break out of her shot because it is so consistent.  She knows she will need to make some changes to move to the next level.  I'm good at a wider variety of lane conditions and releases, but I lack consistency.

Serice, i've also heard that different inserts (purple to be exact) can help provide a few extra revs. Might be worthwhile to invest in these the next time you change inserts.

Serice, just keep in mind that when starting to use a wrist support such as the Pro Release (which is indeed a good one), the support might change the individual's span requirements somewhat.  For bowlers who always use a wrist support, it is best for them to have their hand size checked while wearing the support, so that any corrections can be made when drilling the ball.  Of course, if it is just for a trial run, she can likely get by long enough to see if the Pro Release will give her more of what she needs.

I second what 10 says. I have used a Pro release in the past and had to get my span reduced by almost 1/4 of an inch.

What she needs is not an early rolling ball.  The Inferno would be good, as would a HexRevmaster.  For really heavy oil, try a Super Carbide or WOW Pearl.  Not the WOW.  Too early rolling.  Folks with low speed and low revs need balls to store energy, not to rev up and start turning early.  While I don't personally like the Fuze, she has a good ball for her style.  If she really wants a heavy oil ball, I suggest the WOW Pearl.

I agree with terminator3. Early rolling dull ball will be a suicide for a low rev rate and speed bowler. You didn't mention her axis rotation and axis tilt. From my experience with low rev and speed players, if she has decent rotation, highly polished reactive ball, preferably med-high diff. with a length drilling will be the ticket. If she likes the Purple Fuze, she can try Red Fuze. Inferno will be suitable for heavier conditions. I have two friends with very low revs and speed. One of them is playing with original Trauma and other one is playing with Demolition Zone with great success..

Regarding wrist support, I would try Storm Strong Arm Plus. In my humble opinion, it is the best wrist support to date..
