Thumb Pitch
« on: August 01, 2013, 10:18:12 AM »
What do anyone think of thumb pitch for an span of 4 7/8 and 5 I am using 1 /8 rev and zero lateral was told that I may like 1/4 rev better.

If you have an older ball spend the money and have the thumb plugged or slugged and try it.
You'll never know till you try.
Nothing should or ever stay the same.
Good Luck

More reverse will help you clear the thumb easier/faster.

Typically, someone with a 5" span will have a 1/4" to 1/2" reverse depending on the flexibility of your thumb.  See link below:

I don't think Taylors theories are always appropriate in todays game.  First, I believe the thumb pitch with respect to the finger pitch is more important than the thumb pitch with respect to span.  I grew up with those old standards, and have a span of 4 13/16, 4 7/8.  As a result I used a 1/4 reverse for years.  I also used 1/4 tuck on my fingers.  When I tried to go with a softer release and not hit up with lift I had a hard time making the change.  After looking at what some of the pros were doing, I went with 1/4 forward on my thumb and 1/4 away on my fingers.  By doing this it shifted the weight of the ball in my hand more towards the pads of my fingers than down in my palm.  For whatever reason this allowed me to keep my grip more relaxed without grabbing, and I easily cleared the ball just as early even with the forward thumb pitch.  I have since gone to 1/2 away on the fingers, but made no further change on the thumb.  I think the key was really the change in finger pitch for my needs.

The flexibility of your thumb can have a determination on the pitch needs.  In my case I can use almost any thumb pitch from 1/8 reverse to 1/4 forward with the away finger pitches and get the release I want.

In the end it depends on what you are trying to accomplish with a pitch change.  If it is a comfort issue you may need to make different change than if you are looking for something different in your release.  In either case don't neglect possible finger pitch changes to accompany any thumb pitch change.

Right now I use 1/8 away in the fingers with vacuum grips tried as much as 5/8 away in the fingers find myself squeezing the ball.

My span is pretty close to yours.  I used to have 7/16 reverse, then 5/16, (1/8 lateral) and after getting fitted by the great Ron Hoppe, I'm at 1/4 reverse and 0 lateral.  Ron said he never uses lateral pitch in the thumb.  He also gave me 3/4 reverse (away) in both fingers and I must say it's the most comfortable grip I've ever had.

All of the charts and such are just guides for a starting point.  Use the least amount of reverse that allows you to clear the thumb clean, with a proper sized hole and no excessive bevel.  If you clear 1/8 clean adding to that will add tension in your hand to hold on to the ball.  If you are hanging up a little on 1/8, add to it 1/8 at a time until you no longer hang.

I think that I will stay with 1/8 rev sometimes I feel there is too much loft other than that I just relax my grip still get good rotation.
