Bowlmor, I shall not return
« on: November 07, 2016, 12:20:10 PM »
I've been bowling at LandPark Lanes in Sacramento, Ca for about 10 years or so. I'm getting tired of lanes breaking down every freak'n week. I bowl second shift and we never ever bowl on time. Either slow bowlers before us, or lanes break down which is happening more often. The worst part, one mechanic is on duty and if he's on lunch break, we wait a long time to get service.

When multiple lanes breaks down, or need a re-spot, or whatever it may be, we wait. We wait, we wait, we wait, and wait..... I'm just getting tired of it. It's not even half the season and I fell like leaving. But, my teammate are important to me so I'll stick it out.

I may suggest we move the league else where, but if they don't plan to move, then I'll look into going to another house and league.

Sorry to hear of your lackluster center.  But this is really a condemnation of LandPark Lanes and not BowlMor in general.  I realize it is easy to blast BowlMor for anything related to the management of an individual center, but it is more associated with the staff at your center.

I wouldn't condemn all of a restaurant chain because of slow service at another.  I just don't go to that one in particular.

I wish you luck in finding a center that meets your needs.  Shouldn't have to deal with slowness of the staff at anytime in my opinion.

I bowl at a large privately owned center, and we have the same issues.  Lane breakdowns, slow response for spotting pins, removing dead wood, damage to bowling balls, etc.  The only time we ever finish bowling on time is if there are absent bowlers or a few people pre-bowled.  Otherwise we are always running about 30 minutes late.  I agree it is very frustrating, but it seems to be common in the industry from what I have heard.

I should be clear, Not Bowlmor in general, but this one bowlmor house. I know of a couple bowlmor houses with sport leagues, good leagues, good service, and at least two mechanics on duty.

I may suggest we move the league else where, but if they don't plan to move, then I'll look into going to another house and league.

I thought that Land Park had closed down.. I knew that Alpine Valley did, but thought Land Park had also closed up shop when they force the PSO out of the house.

Question.. is it a true AMF house? meaning, pinsetters? I ask because I've never stepped foot in it, mainly because I've heard how bad the place has been, even before the BowlMor buyout.

In all honesty, I'm really worried about the bowling scene here in town, as it appears the entire town is in dire need of renovation.

Mardi Gras and Rocklin appear to be holding their own, but once again, Bowlmor. They don't appear to have lost most of their bowlers, as they are the two biggest houses in the city (in terms of number of lanes, and Mardi Gras allegedly has the biggest youth leagues).

Fireside, while a good house, is showing its age. Steve Cook could definitely renovate and make it better (IIRC, the last big purchase they made were for the lanes from Crestview, and they are holding up well). As the PWBA has their tour stop here, was Leanne's home, and produced Amanda Fry, this is definitely the place for bowlers.

Country Club... desperately needs work, outside of just being a family fun center for laser tag. Their biggest saving grace is that at least they are treating their league bowlers well. But the place looks like it came out of the 60s (because it did).

Strikes (Elk Grove and Rocklin)... too far out to even want to try.

Lake Bowl and Capitol Lanes definitely are catering to their local residents, but again, not much to offer that I've seen.

Now, I'm more than likely being harsh because I came into this area from Las Vegas so I've been spoiled, but when I see alleys closer to the bay area (read: Dublin, San Jose), Portland, Medford, and even way out in Jefferson Northern California, like Weed and Yreka holding their own, I have to wonder what the hell is going on here that is stifling not just the game, but the physical attractiveness (read: look, feel, performance) of the alleys in this area. I mean, you can't keep up with a modern game using 50 year old equipment.

xrayjay, when do you bowl? I may stop by just to see how the house looks.

No, it is Bowlmor.
I have now left 2 houses, both large, each of which was taken over by Bowlmor. One was a large 48 lane AMF house that was once thelargest grossing AMF house on the eastern seaboard. The 2nd was the famous Brunswick Carolier Lanes, an 82 lane mega-house, once the home of the PBA OPen and the Johnny Petraglia Open. Now, it's a Bowlmor house.

Bowlmor management in both houses forced out 3-5 large leagues from each house over a 3 year period of time

Jay,

Sorry to hear you got caught in a "Bowlmor crush". Count your blessings now and find another house. I'm now travelling 45 minutes in opposite direction to bowl in 2 other houses, privately owned, who care about the bowler. I am thrilled to have found such places, despite the long travel time.

"Milo",
If you went thru what I did with these Bowlmor situations in 2 completely different houses in 2 different areas, this wouldn't be a joking matter. Bowlmor is f*cking with league bowling in MAJOR way, here in NJ and with bowlers in XrayJay's area.

I'm in XRayJay's area and have bowled at LandPark many times. The place has always been kind of a dump, even before Bowlmor. Bowling in the Sac area has gone down hill and there were houses like AMF Alpine that closed down before Bowlmor took over. If I remember correctly, AMF Crestview closed before Bowlmor as well.

Two different weekends in October, I bowled a tournament at AMF Rocklin and it's a very nice place. Same owners, different management.

Our local AMF house that fell into the BowlMor cesspool suffered the same predictable fate. Leagues died, and maintenance suffered. There might be BowlMors that are managed well and maintained well, but I sense that's more the exception than the rule.

What Jay went thru and what you see/saw is just the beginning, unless you get a new manager. Both of my former houses are under the same area manager, a guy who got promoted from one house manager because of the money he saved instituting changes in maintenance of place, firing mechanics, not cleaning the setee areas, not cleaning the approaches, not maintaining the oil machines, not oiling, etc. For this Bowlmor promoted him.

I could give you a whole litany of things he did at Greenbrook AMF and that he's now doing at Carolier; he'll bring Carolier down to its knees soon also.

FYI Greenbrook has been begging the members of the leagues it kicked out 2 years ago to return, because their plan to live on parties and Cosmic bowling and business parties had resulted in a $10 million loss last season. This season they did the same at Carolier.

I realize you have had bad experiences with BowlMor in the past, but what you are describing is an issue with a particular person.  And as such it has made you not like BowlMor.  The same can be said of many privately owned centers also.

I definitely think BowlMor could do better in hiring managers, but too often they go the direction of money made, no matter how short-sighted it may be.  I am lucky my center has a good manager who tries to meet the increasingly difficult demands of league bowlers.  I only hope anyone disappointed with their center finds one with a manager like ours.

And if anyone thinks BowlMor will ruin league bowling in general, remember this, BowlMor has less than 8% of the centers in the country.

Crestview closed at least 2 years after I moved here, and that was in 2003. so maybe 2006 at the latest. Alpine Valley was .. I want to say 2007. Whatever year the Track Animal came out, Alpine Valley closed.

But I agree: bowling has really gone downhill in Sacramento, and I was wondering if I was the only one that was seeing that.

Yea, it's sad to see as Sacramento has a rich bowling history.

But as a few of the houses show, it CAN be quite profitable with the right ownership.

Crestview and Alpine both closed while I lived in Sacramento, 2008-11.  Just for reference the Track Animal was released before I worked for track in 2004.
